Tombstone.
This afternoon I was working in front of the office when Serenity came over. “What are you doing here?” I asked her.
“I’m givin the Marshal here my statement ’bout the shootin’ yesterday. Self defence is what it was..”
“Sure it was,” I muttered.
“When the marshal and sheriff died. You weren’t there for that time, miss.”
“Sign that and return it to me miss Vix,” Kris instructed.
“Hey Kris,” I nodded to him.
“The time I shot you, was when you got my friend thrown in jail,” she told me.
“Because he threatened a man and got in a gunfight with a soldier. It was under Nhil’s department as an arrest. You’ll have to take it up with him.”
“That solider was a loose cannon all day yesterday.”
“I’m going to do the rounds,” I looked at Kris and started to walk around town.
I talked with the group in front of the saloon and Ella told us that the paper was out. I kept walking around and talked with Ali and Gabe. They told me they were starting their family and I hugged Alli in congratulations.
“How have you been, Miss Trin?” Ali asked.
“I…” I looked down. “Well, not great to be honest.”
“Everything alright Miss Trin?”
“No... Everything is definitely not alright,” I shook my head.
“What’s wrong, Miss Trin?” Nhil asked.
“Just been... re-evaluating some things..”
“ You care to talk about it Miss Trin?” Ali asked, looking around.
“Yeah... I could use some friends. And a drink,” I nodded.
“Can’t let last night bother you, dealing with outlaws is hard business,” Nhil shrugged at me. “No offence,” he smirked at Ali and Gabe. “Their own thing is to bully the good folk to dropping their badges and running away, so they can have the run of the town… have to be strong and stick it in their face you here, it’s how I do it..and it pisses them off something awful.”
“Well I don’t think I’m supposed to be drinking. Perhaps Gabe can get a bottle of whiskey for ya.”
“I know but... I think I’m gonna go off duty and head to the saloon if ya’ll want to join me..” I nodded and headed into the saloon with them.
“I in trouble or somethin’?” Ali asked, looking between me and Nhil.
“I’m not law, ma’am,” Nhil smirked.
“You may not have to worry about that for too long,” I said and took my badge off, putting it in my pocket. “I’m thinking of making some changes... Or being more true to who I really am.”
“And who might that be Miss Trin?” Ali asked.
“She upset about last night...letting others tell her who she is,” Nhil sighed.
“It’s not just last night,” I looked at him.
“Well that is all we ever can be Trin, as long as I am not lookin down your gun we good,” Vic said.
I drank the whiskey down, letting it soothe me. “I’ve been trying to revive the perspective of law for a while now... And I simply get dragged down. It’s time to fix the problem from the right angle.”
“Well you are new Trin, with that comes ...stress, lots of information and things to learn...and finding your comfort zone,” Nhil leaned against the counter.
“And what might that angle be do you think?” Ali asked.
“My comfort zone is without a gun on my hip,” I looked at Nhil.
“I think I understand what you are saying, I seen it,” Vic nodded.
“Oh...could be a doctor...or help out at courts,” Nhil nodded.
“Exactly. I have experience as a prosecutor. I’m going to talk to Dee about it as soon as I talk with Ansar,” I said.
“No I know what she is saying Nhil. We’ve all been saying it really,” Vic said.
“So you thinking bout becoming a lawyer miss Trin?” Ali asked.
“I don’t know, for sure. All I know for sure is I’m going to go back to being a detective.. I just need to talk to Ansar or Skyla and make it official.”
“Ifn you were happy do it then ya should go back to it,” Ali said.
“Yeah... It was much less stress, that’s for sure,” I nodded.
“Someone giving you a hard time?” Gabe asked.
“I just get sick of feeling like I have a knife in my back,” Vic said.
“I know what you mean,” I nodded to her. “Just been re-evaluating some things, Gabe,” I said to him.
“I think you like deputy, but getting bullied from doing it.. and that’s sad,” Nhil frowned.
“I think you do too Trin,” Vic nodded.
“Lots of folk get bullied round here,” Ali agreed.
“Not when most of my team is getting killed and I’m left stranded…” I sighed. “I can’t do this job on my own. Being a detective, that I can do on my own.”
“Being the good guy is hard...you can do it alone, just need time to learn,” Nhil shrugged.
“How many times law need to get shot before going to the shootin range?” Ali laughed.
“It does not help that your fellow law like to tuck tail and run,” Vic said.
“If a guy as skilled as Tye can get shot and killed, it ain’t about skill,” I looked at Ali.
“I’ve seen some of these outlaws. They fast,” Ali clapped a bit.
“Skilled as Tye,” Vic snorted some of her drink.
“Then what is it about Miss Trin?” Ali asked.
“We took out their entire gang, until Punk ran off and was hiding,” Nhil frowned. “Only reason last night didn’t work out, was because they had a lot of magic tricks that helped them pop out of cuffs and rope tied feet without anyone even seeing it.”
“Some of these outlaws just have no honor, and I say that being an outlaw,” Gabe said.
“True..whole thing started, because Dom tried to murder Victoria while he knew she was with child because she didn’t want to join his gang,” Nhil nodded.
Ifn ya know they be using some kinda magic, I suggest you take it up with the mayor ifn law cant do nothing,” Ali said. “I wasn’t involved in last night, i ain’t seen no magic as you say they have.”
“I know you weren’t part of last night at all Ali,” Vic said. “I like you. You’re a good outlaw. Well you know what I mean.”
“Yeah, but even outlaws get down,” Chu said, and I realized he was listening to our conversation.
“Well if I’m gonna do this…” I stood slowly.
“There is good reason for you to do what you do not just to show off,” Vic said. “If there were no outlaws there would be no law. It’s a love hate thing.”
“Don’t do it Trin..not worth it, to let others push you around,” Nhil shook his head.
“I ain’t got no reason to impress anyone in this town. What other outlaws do, I ain’t got no control over,” Ali said.
“Not worth going against who I am either. I know what I’m good at, and that’s bein’ a detective,” I looked at Nhil.
“Do what ya feel is right for you Miss Trin,” Ali said and I sighed, heading for the sheriff’s office.
