Tombstone.
It had been a long weekend away and one that I had not seen coming. Alex and I had gone up north to visit my family but we got into a huge fight on the way there. He started to get nervous about meeting my family and while I insisted that it would be okay, he wasn’t so sure. Before I knew it we were talking about how it was getting too serious too fast and we had to slow down. He dropped me off at Ma’s ranch and then rode the train back to Tombstone, saying he’d probably be wandering around the desert for a few days to get his thoughts together.
Emotionally spent, I stayed a few extra days with Ma and Josh and then rode the train back home. It felt wrong staying in our big empty house without him and I knew things would have to change.
I walked out of the office, feeling lost, and wiped a tear from my eye when I saw a stranger walking over. “Hi...” I greeted him softly.
“Something wrong?” the man asked.
“It’s been a rough couple of days,” I looked down.
“I’ve heard tell you do a show.”
“Right, in Bisbee... I play and sing on Monday afternoons,” I nodded.
“Ohh... what about here?” he smiled.
“I don’t play here, Bisbee keeps me busy enough,” I tried to smile.
“Now that’s a nice smile, better than those tears.”
“I’m sorry... My name’s Trin. Though I guess you knew that if you’ve heard that I sing in Bisbee.”
“I’m James...James Vest.”
“Pinkerton detective? Out west?”
“James, nice to meet you,” I said and looked over at the man, “Yes sir.”
“Now that is just so unfair,” the man said.
“Unfair why?” I asked and he walked down the street. I looked back at James and said, “That was weird.”
“I thought so too,” he laughed.
“I’m sorry I’m not making the best first impression.”
“Not necessary. Say, you should have seen me catch my horse on fire earlier.”
“Sounds like it was interesting.”
“Well not for the horse,” he laughed.
I chuckled a bit then sighed, “Anything going on in town?”
“Looks like more people maybe. Know a girl named Kitty Kat?”
I tried to recall from my notebook and said, “Hmm, I know of a Kitty. Not sure if it’s the same person.”
“Yeah I’ll bet there’s a lot of Kitty’s around these parts.”
“I’ve known a few in my lifetime,” I cringed a little.
“So what are your plans?” James asked.
“Plans?” I looked at him.
“For this evening.”
“Didn’t really have any... Need to wander the streets and see what’s happening with local law I guess. I just got back from a rather difficult weekend away. Was enough of a battle to get myself to the office but I’ve got to do something.”
“Yeah well I hope things get better.”
“They can only go up from here, right?”
“They will,” he winked.
“I should get to work. It was nice meeting you, James.”
“You too, see you around.”
“See you,” I nodded and headed down the street, waving to Suzy as I walked towards the sheriff’s office. No one was about though, so I just headed back to my office to gather my thoughts.
