Tombstone.
This evening I walked over to Kate’s and greeted Jack Smith. “Hey Pinky.”
“Hi, Jack.”
“How are you tonight?”
“I’ve been better, to be honest. You?” I shrugged.
“Oh, what’s wrong? You look good.”
“Could use a drink...”
“Well come on, belly up,” he laughed and led the way inside Kate’s. He went behind the counter and asked, “What you want? Bourbon? Tequila?”
“Whiskey?” I leaned against the counter.
“Whiskey for me too, Jack, when ya ready,” Jewel grinned as she walked into the saloon behind us.
“Two whiskeys coming right up,” Jack nodded.
“Hey Jewel,” I looked over.
“We met before?” Jewel looked at me.
“Seen ya in court,” I nodded.
Jack poured two glasses half full and handed one to each of us, then drank from the bottle.
“Thanks Jack,” I nodded to him.
“On the house,” he insisted.
“Really?”
“Really, as it’s a holiday.”
“That’s right, I remember you now... One of Adder’s old friends, right?” Jewel nodded.
“You know Adder?” I looked over at her.
“I know Adder. Not that well.”
“He was one of my best friends for the longest time.... Before I moved to Tombstone.”
“Very well.”
“Haven’t seen him in years... Geez... Adder Taurus,” I shook my head. So much time had passed.
“Yep that’s him,” Jack nodded.
“I will tell him you said hello,” Jewel smiled.
“Do that,” I smiled. “Great man, that one.”
Jack looked at the empty glass and asked, “How about another?”
“Probably shouldn’t. Might never get home... Wherever home will be now.”
“Fire,” Jack said then and laughed. I smelled the smoke and walked out with them, curious where the fire was. Sniper walked over and I looked to see flames out by the Sheriff’s office. I ran to get a bucket and threw the water on the fire as they all stood around and talked about how there was no marshals around to do anything about it.
I walked back to the crowd and greeted Bree and Sniper. Tx and Brooke came over to join the group and then Sniper greeted a man named Josey who walked over. I blinked at that and turned, “Well well well... Josey... Long time no see. How the heck have ya been?”
“Been a bit, I reckon,” he nodded to me. “Swell.”
“Mmhmmm, Some fifteen years or so,” I nodded.
Lilly walked over then and asked, “Where’s the injured? And someone kick Lot in the butt.”
“No injured here, is there?” Sniper asked, looking around.
“What happened, Lilly?” I asked.
“I heard there was, so I came running. Dang it,” she sighed.
“Ain’t no one been hurt yet,” Jewel looked around.
“Okay then I will look around for blood, ‘cause I heard through the grapevine that someone was shot.”
“Didn’t happen over here, Lil,” I shrugged.
“Usually here. Go figure.”
“I see Lot over there, go ask him,” Sniper nodded towards Lot who was walking over.
“Probably a good guess that’s where it is then, if Lot’s around,” I winked at Sniper and he laughed.
“Any idea who’s injured, Lot?”
“Yup, Miss Loreh,” he nodded.
I heard Lot come up behind me and jumped. “Loreh was shot? Where?”
“Outside Bisbee. Or do you mean where on the body?” Lot asked with a smirk.
I shook my head hearing him and said, “Gonna wander then. Night all.”
Black Diamond.
I walked into Diamond, trying to ignore the feelings of awkwardness since we’d left the town, and opened the door to the clinic. Cooky waved to me and I looked around, seeing Lilly and Loreh talking. Another woman was there who I hadn’t met yet.
“Loreh, you alright?” I looked at her, concerned.
“Hi Trin. Need to get the trauma taken care of,” Lilly greeted me.
“Hey Lilly. As soon as Lot said Loreh was the one hurt, I figured she’d be here.”
“Oh no, I’m fine now lady... I couldn’t wait and all the signs here were helpful.. I treated myself,” Loreh said to Lilly.
“She’s okay,” Cooky nodded and turned to look at me, seeing my expression. She walked up to me and squeezed me tight. “No sad faces! Not allowed!”
“Well that is a blessing. I came running from Tombstone,” Lilly told her.
I tried not to make my bare left hand too obvious but looked at Cooky with a knowing expression.
“Sorry to alarm you all but I’m fine now,” Loreh assured. “Just a little love token of a bullet from Lot.”
“He just a meanie that one,” Cooky shook her head. “Not our fault the ghosts got hold of the snow and pelted him some.”
“What happened?” I looked at her. “He must have had a reason to shoot you.”
“I hit his butt with a snowball!” Loreh said and I chuckled a little.
“And then my snowball took off his hat,” Cooky said proudly.
“Good job, Cooky!” I said to her. “Surprised he didn’t shoot you too.”
“It was just a bit of harmless fun... and then he got all huffy and puffy... and pew pew...”
“If he can’t throw a snowball, he’s pretty sad,” Lilly said then.
“Well if he had I would have got me frying pan out my pocket and hit him hard!”
“Better than shootin’,” Lilly said.
“Mmhmm, you and that frying pan are dangerous,” I nodded.
“Served him right!” she giggled. “Then I would have hogtied his sorry arse to me horses arse and dragged him back to Ivy.. And left a note just fer her.”
“Ivy would hide his gun for a week!” Loreh commented.
“Make him clean the floor,” Cooky added. “And sleep with the pig.”
“I bet she would,” I nodded.
“And she should too!” Lilly nodded.
“And thennnnnnnn she would drag him around town, making him say sorry!” Cooky nodded.
“Maybe she already does.. that would explain that scent,” Loreh put in.
I looked over at her and said, “I’ve gotta find a place to crash tonight. Can’t keep sleeping at the office.”
“Oh silly I got a empty house come move in with me! Since I all single and all that stuff,” she hesitated.
“Makes two of us,” I sighed. “Where’s your place?”
“Or even better... my office for bounty is empty too... it’s a house with everything in it too if yer want too Trin.”
We started to head outside but as soon as we stepped into the street I knew that I wasn’t ready to look at houses yet. It still hurt too much to look at other houses and I was getting tired as I hadn’t slept much all week. I said goodnight to the girls and headed back to the office.
