Tombstone.
I walked into the clinic having seen a telegram for a doctor and saw Suzy laying on the bed as Jess searched for the bullet and worked on the wound.
“What happened?” I asked with worry.
“Oh, was trying to arrest him for the warrant on him and he ran off shooting,” Suzy said.
“Trying to arrest who?” I asked.
“Jack,” she said and I raised an eyebrow.
“Well I’ll leave you two ladies to it then,” I said and walked out of the clinic, greeting Serenity who was looking in the window.
“Well theres a face I ain’t seen in a while... Evenin Pinky,” she greeted me.
“Indeed... Been kinda laying low lately I guess. How’ve you been, Serenity?”
She grumbled and tugged on her scarf. “Cold, dangit. I’m no fan of this snow that’s popped up into Ghenna now.”
“Mmhmm I hear that. Ready for spring already.”
“Speakin’ of trouble... yer keepin’ yourself outta it? Or finding more to dig into?”
“Depends on what kind of trouble,” I sighed. “I’m single again.. So I’ve just been healing from that more than anythin’. Ready to get back on the horse and focus on work now though, you know?”
“So you ain’t askin’ round Diamond no more ’bout me are ya?”
“Nope... Haven’t been to Diamond in a while. I go wherever work takes me and lately that’s been, well, nowhere.”
“Ya still a deputy out in Bisbee?”
“Nope... Just a detective now. Have been for a while now I guess.”
“Better off anyway, safer. Plus ain’t no one gonna commit a crime in Bisbee anyway if they gonna hang for whatever they do,” Serenity nodded.
“Yeah it’s true... Was getting pretty quiet there. How are things with you? Keeping busy?”
“Ain’t got no bodies to undertake when no folks dyin’ lately. But I keep myself entertained in small ways,” she shrugged her shoulders.
“I’ll bet,” I chuckled.
“You need customers?” Blackfoot asked then. “I can get ya them.”
“If you ever in need of my services, I got an office in Ghenna and Pearce...I always like customers,” Serenity laughed and smirked a bit.
“Well, won’t be me needin’ it, but I know a few of them that ain’t liking our company as of late,” he said.
“That’ll happen... folks tend to get sour real quick.”
“‘Specially when ya rob, and burn their little town.”
“Mmhmm. Think I’m gonna wander around. See ya’ll soon!” I said and stood up and walked over to the Crystal Palace. I greeted Ripley and joined him for a drink. I had a drink of whiskey and when he asked me how I was I said, “Digging myself out of emotional hell but gettin back on the horse.”
“Oh? Why, what’s happened?”
“Broke up with Alex. Or the other way around…”
“Which Alex?”
“Torii. He’s goin’ to be a doctor now so I don’t know... Anyway... life goes on, right?”
“Of course. Why the break, just one of those things?”
“Got too serious too fast.”
“Too fast? Ya was together a while, wasn’t ya?”
“Couple months,” I nodded and sighed. “It is what it is I guess.”
We talked about how Ripley had been shot when he’d fought with someone who’d started with Sniper and he tried to cheer me up about the breakup. I told him I was going to stay single for a while and try to enjoy the moment. We complained about the lack of help from law and how there wasn’t much to investigate, and why I couldn’t be law either. After a while we said goodnight and I headed home.
