October 18, 1899

Tombstone.

This morning I rode down Allen Street on my way to the sheriff’s office. I greeted the crowd of people standing in the street and then went over to the office to look at the warrant book. I saw that there was still a warrant out for Sam and Balt, though Sam and Carl’s names were both on the court docket.

Bisbee.

Back in Bisbee, I sat in front of the sheriff’s office and started the morning shift. As I was sitting there, Waterfall walked over to me and said, “Trin, lock me up please.”

“Why? What did you do?” I asked, “Or are you just trying to hide from someone?”

“What I feel like doing,” she said.

“I’m confused. I can’t just lock you up, Waterfall.”

“I feel I not get white eye justice.”

“For doing what?”

“I was kidnapped and I put my report in but not heard a word.”

“Then Balt needs to be arrested, not you. That warrant is still valid. As soon as we see him we can arrest him. Believe me, law has been made aware of it. I don’t know why it’s taken this long.”

“Then you should talk to a doctor.”

“If I right, he endangered another life.”

“Waterfall really, there’s nothing I can do. When we find him, we’ll arrest him. We know the situation. I won’t put you in jail. You’re the victim.”

“My mind getting mixed again.”

“You’ve been around long enough to know how things work around here.”

“I have. I put in my report. They get arrested, it go to court.”

“Waterfall, it’s already been done. Sereiously , just let it go for now and let us do our jobs please?”

“Ok, you do me one favor if you not arrest me.”

“What?” I asked with a sigh.

“Keep this safe,” she said, handing over her hawk.

“Why would you give me that? Don’t you need it for protection?”

“Okay, I try and relax. See you later,” she took the weapon back.

“Okay that’s a good idea.”

As she left I shook my head, hoping someone would find Balt soon so Waterfall could relax.

Diamond.

I walked into Diamond after finishing my morning shift and greeted James who walked right over to me. I asked if he’d seen a guy named Balth and he said he and Bree knew him. We talked about how both Carl and Sam would be going to trial in Bisbee for shooting law and I was curious because I had only seen the arrest report for Carl.

A woman walked over to us and looked from me to James.

“Morning, miss. I am James, a prosecutor to Tombstone.”

“I am Meg... um recent arrival from Eastland.”

“Meg, welcome to the area! Sorry for us talking business so much,” I chuckled.

“Pardon my interuption i was just a wondering if either of you kind folks had a firearm on yer person.”

“Well, nice to meet you. If you need any help let us know. Folks around here are friendly enough.”

“I do need help,” Meg nodded.

“Ya have a firearm, Sir? Or Missus?”

“What happened?” I asked, looking at her suspiciously.

“I aim ta shoot me some supper!”

“Now Trin, be nice. Put away your detective ways for a bit and greet our newcomer nicely,” James laughed.

I chuckled at that as Meg pointed up at the large and noisy circling birds.

“Sorry but when someone asks if I have a firearm it’s not usually to shoot at some birds,” I said as Bree walked over.

“Those dreaded cacklers wake me each crack of daylight since I have arrived at this God-forsaken place. I have finally located my great aunt Nettie’s recipe book and her stew was infamous back home.”

“Trin, may want to go after Dash too,” James suggested then.

“What’d Dash do? I see no warrant out for him...” I looked at him.

“Well he tore up eight summons yesterday in Tombstone braggin’ he ain’t seen a courtroom yet and not going to.”

“Dash, oh man that fella is just a case,” Bree laughed.

“Oh, he a nice enough fella,” James put in. “Just needs some.. well, maybe some Trin guidance to show him a courtroom,” he laughed.

“Funny,” I chuckled.

“Would someone please shoot that blasted bird?” Meg complained, putting her hands on her hips.

“Careful Meg, you get pooped on. Don’t look up,” Bree suggested.

I saw Alex coming over from the direction of our house. I ran over to him and hugged him tightly. “Darling!” He hugged me tightly and we walked over to the crowd.

“Psst. Sir?” Meg asked Alex and I chuckled knowing what she’d ask.

“Hello, ma’a,” Ale greeted her.

“Ya have a pistol?”

“I always carry a gun on me.”

“Ya mind blastin’ those foul fowls outta my misery?”

“She has a thing against the birds,” I laughed.

“Not sure it’d help, ma’am. Those things have a way of coming back from the dead.”

“Really?!” Meg gasped at the thought and I laughed at that.

“Mmhmm, it’s true.”

“You alright there, Meg? You seem a bit skiddish.”

“I shall never get used to this heathen place!”

“You from the city, ma’am?” Alex laughed.

“It a bit of a culture shock, but you get used to it,” James laughed.

“Well to be honest Missus... the um notion of being haunted by a foul fowl is really not to my fancy.”

We continued to talk about the area and the meeting that would be coming up soon, and then April told us about a sale at a store nearby. I looked at Alex as if giving a hint, and we headed out to shop for new dresses for the upcoming dances and events.
