Tombstone.
This afternoon I walked down the street and waved to Jack and another woman in front of the undertaker’s office. Jack was saying that he was a business man who did a little banking and trading, and I stifled a laugh at that.
“Didn’t mean to interrupt, just ain’t seen ya in a while Jack. How are things?” I asked.
“Hey Trin,” he smiled and offered me a strawberry. “And I help the detective sometimes,” he added to his list of responsibilities as he talked to the lady.
“Mmhmm, he does,” I nodded and smiled at Jessica who walked over to join us. “Not that I’ve had much to do lately. Hi Jess.”
“Well the bank was just robbed,” Jack noted.
“Oh was it?”
“Yes. I’m afraid it’s against my code to tell you who,” he laughed.
“Uh huh. Of course. Probably no law to do anything about it anyway.”
“You know, I didn’t see any law, but I did hear explosions,” Jack nodded. “Maybe Miss Bree could tell you more,” he said, chewing on a cookie. “Oh my these are good!”
“It just seems we can’t keep law around to do anything,” Jess sighed.
“So how did the doctoring go, Jess?” Jack asked.
“Not bad. Ordinary gun shot wounds.”
“The law is scared,” Jack told me.
“What law?” I asked.
“Well there is... let me see...” he thought about it. “Kris, and Kris, and... Kris.”
“Really now? There ain’t be no law here now?” the woman asked with a thick accent.
“Did Devin give up already?” Jess asked.
“May as well be in Denver then,” the woman sighed.
“Not any that can shoot,” Jack shook his head. “This is an outlaw town now, but we got fresh strawberries!”
“Well that’s something,” Jess nodded.
“Yeah, outlaws shooting outlaws,” Jack said.
“That is what I am understanding,” Jess sighed. “It doesn’t make sense.”
“Sure it does,” Jack nodded. “They all ran off scared.”
“Not much use for me then,” I sighed. “Docket’s been full... but no trials for at least a couple of weeks... So I’m not really needed as a detective or a lawyer.”
“Well like I have one maybe two warrants out on me,” Jack said, “And was just talking to the ranger.” He looked at me and asked, “How is you at being a lawyer?”
“We’d have trial if there were enough people ‘round,” I shrugged.
“So who shot Lisa and TJ? Did you find out Jess?” Jack asked.
“Someone shot TJ and Lisa?” I looked at them.
“Yeah just now,” Jack nodded.
“I don’t think you would believe me,” Jess said.
“Yeah just now,” Jack nodded.
“Who was it?” I asked.
“Rip,” Jess said and I shook my head.
“Why did she shoot them, Jess?”
“Don’t s’pose anyone witnessed it. Or filed a report about it,” I guessed.
“No law here, no ma’am,” Jack shook his head. “But if you talk to miss Bree you might find out who robbed the bank. She was working the register.”
“That is what doesn’t make sense. I don’t know why he would shoot them.”
“Ifn yah did fin out who done robbed it... what would yah do den?” the woman asked me.
“Which bank was it?” I asked.
“She could file a report with Kris,” Jack suggested.
“Well yeah she should, but I doubt she will.”
“The way I feel as long as they don’t hurt miss Bree, I don’t care who robbed it. There never is much money in there anyway,” Jess said.
“No one came I myself put my bottle down and walked over and looked in the window and Bam,” Jack recounted. “They set off dynamite it knocked me on my backside. Got up coughing and eased out of there never saw who.”
The woman went into the hotel and we soon smelled something wonderful. After talking a bit longer, I decided to wander off and see if I could find Bree.
