September 2, 1899

Bisbee.

This morning I walked out of my office and smiled when I saw Stephen. “Well hey there!” I greeted him.

“G’day, Miss Paige,” he tipped his hat.

“Good to see you again, Stephen. Care to join me for a coffee as I start my shift?”

“You are a lookin’ all official like today. Sounds like a right good idea.’

“Mmhmm, have to do some work sometime,” I winked.

Bella walked over then and asked us, “You’ve heard of the Black Birds?”

“Of course,” I nodded.

“No ma’am. Not unless ya mean a raven or a crow,” Stephen said.

“They run Black Diamond now,” she stated. “Outlaws.”

“They are a nasty group…”

“As long as they pay their doctor bill, don’t mind me no never mind what they are,” Stephen shrugged.

“Oh are you a doc?” she asked.

“Gonna be one soon enough.”

I greeted TJ, the newest deputy, and Cletis as I introduced them to Stephen. I commented on how it was the most people I’d seen in Bisbee in weeks. We talked about Bisbee and how it’d been so quiet lately. I commented on the fact that no one wanted to do any crimes there because no one wanted to get hanged. I went to my office and then came back out to the cafe where Bella, TJ and Stephen were talking. Stephen and I headed to the Stock Exchange and got ourselves a drink.

“So… Dancing was fun last night, darlin’,” I looked over at him.

“It was indeed my sweet,” he grinned. “I’m glad you enjoyed.”

“Nice to have someone to spend time with while I’m on duty too.”
He reached in and shuffled around in his pocket and pulled something out wrapped in leather. “’ere ya go, I done got ya somethin’ in case ya find ya’self in a bit of trouble.”

I smiled and took it, seeing the boot hunting knife. I blinked, and looked over at him. “Are you sure?”

“Done helped me out of a few tight spots,” Stephen smiled. “They done rarely check yur boots.”

I slipped the knife down into my boot and said, “Mmhmm... I owe ya, darlin’.”

We sat for a while getting to know each other until I played at the saloon and played piano to a huge crowd.
