Tombstone.
After spending the morning in my office catching up on paperwork, I walked into town and greeted the crowd in front of the undertakers’. I talked with Wedge, Cole, Liz and Angeles who were all standing around. I observed how we don’t usually hang out around the undertaker’s office and Wedge said things had been pretty quiet, he’d just been checking out the bank. Cole said that someone had thrown a bucket of water on him.
“We have rats in the Fort so since the cats run too, need find one solution,” Angeles informed us then.
“Oh! Get this, Trin,” Wedge looked at me. “Einstein here wants to kill the rats... so what does she do? Put it in our food! IN!!”
“May I make a suggestion?” A man put in from where he was standing nearby. “Get more cats.”
“I spread poison for all the bedrooms and under the beds too,” Angeles said.
“The poison in the...” I looked to Angeles with surprise.
“The last two cats run...”
“We have those too, Sir,” Wedge said to him.
“Get bigger cats,” he put in.
“Near the beds...?” Cole laughed.
“I ask the fireman marshal to give his pet,” Angeles said, “It’s a lovely one, black panther who always obeys my orders.”
“That’s what I told her to do,” Wedge nodded to Cole, “Put it on the perimeter... corners... but NOT the food!” he sighed.
“The cheese kill some rats, that help...” Angeles said.
“Damn! A hungry man like me eat anything that’s laying around!”
“Fine... then make sure it’s on the floor!” Wedge chuckled.
“Ya don’t put that in the food,” I shook my head and laughed.
“Don’t go to eat at the fort, Cole. I am not always there for care,” Angeles told him.
“How’s about hiring the kids to sit and watch with their sling shots handy?” the man asked.
“Me too Cole... it’s why I got poisoned,” Wedge said.
“And I healed you, my beloved uncle,” Angeles smirked.
“Like you had a choice!” Wedge smirked back.
“Just have to not eat anything around the fort Wedge,” I winked at him.
“Well like veterinarian fort it’s part of my job keeping the rats out,” Angeles said. “But I warning you, Uncle. Next time in middle of the night listen to some gunfight. It’s me shooting rats.”
Wedge rolled his eyes and I laughed at that. “I said... I don’t care... beats eating poison!”
“And him know very well I do that,” Angeles pointed at Wedge.
“Well my order stands,” Wedge said. No poison in the food.”
“I clean that now the poison stay under the beds in every room,” Angeles said.
Suzi walked over then and they started talking about different topics and Angeles spoke to the man I didn’t know with the name Maxx. Sniper joined us and I listened as they talked, and Cole spun his guns out of boredom. I decided to go get some coffee and wandered into the hotel to refill my mug. Ansar and Jeffrey had joined the crowd by then and I went to sit down in front of the Epitath.
“Hi Miss Trin, would you like a paper?” Jeffrey asked me.
“Sure, Jeffrey,” I smiled and took the paper from him.
“Oh, and it’s a joke. We not have a new matron. Miss Peta is the assistant one.”
“I heard ‘bout that,” I smiled. “Bet she’s doin’ a real good job.”
“Yeah she is, sure is.”
We began to read the paper and Richie came over. I waved to him and he leaned forward, “Why howdy, Trin.”
“Was readin’ this here paper and didn’t see ya till ya said somethin’. How are ya?”
“Fine, just fine thank ya, and yourself?”
“Bored I guess,” I shrugged.
“Well I hear there was a shootout in town. You okay?”
“Arm’s still a bit sore but I’ll survive,” I nodded. “Landed right beside the bloody clock.”
Muriel walked over and I greeted her as she continued to banter with Cole and Sniper who came over.
“What were you saying, Trin, about the bloody clock?” Richie asked eventually.
“Oh just that when I was shot in that gunfight thing I landed right by the clock. Haven’t heard anything about it all since.”
“Who shot you?” Muriel asked.
“Clocks... Sick of hearing about clocks!” Cole sighed.
“So you had shootout over a clock?” Richie asked.
“Don’t know... They were in disguise. Have a good guess though.”
“And clock was there?”
“Which night, Trin?” Sniper asked.
I shook my head at Richie, “Guess they were more interested in shooting than giving a deal.” I looked to Sniper and said, “When we had that big shootout in town. Think it was Friday?”
“Ooh, when I erm, helped law?” Sniper clarified with a laugh.
“Yeah, then,” I smiled at him.
“Sneaky son of a...” Cole muttered. “Never know when he’s coming and leavin’.”
Bree, V and Wedge joined the group and they started to talk as I decided to head to my office. I said goodbye to everyone and headed down the street.
