Black Diamond.
This evening I saw a woman matching BB’s description standing in the street near the entrance of the town. I didn’t want to go right over to her, so I wandered to the saloon and greeted Bree and Rikki.
“How are you?” Bree asked.
“Bored,” I chuckled. “Figured I’d wander out here and see what’s goin’ on.”
“Why are ya bored?” Rikki asked.
“Not much happening in town, pretty quiet.”
“Not much right now,” Bree agreed.
“If ya want something to do, you could help me plan a robbery,” Rikki suggested.
“Yeah that’d look good right now,” I chuckled. “Besides, ain’t really any lawmen to do anything about it.”
“Oh hell, you can even help me commit it,” Rikki grinned.
I looked over and smiled seeing Wedge. “Ah, Wedge is in town. Excuse me ladies.” Walking over I greeted him and asked, “So um... you think you could send a telegram to Ansasr to get him out here?”
“I could... what do you want me to tell him?”
“Well... that a person he’s asked me to find is here in town.”
Cletis walked over then and they joked that I had the hots for Ansar. I said I needed him for some law work and ignored their teasing, focusing on work. Cletis asked if anyone had seen Punk as I took out my warrant for BB and showed it to Wedge. He looked over it and Cletis asked if it was a warrant for BB.
“Have you seen her Trin?” Wedge asked me.
“Yeah. On my way into town from Bisbee.”
“Sho nuff, well I’ll find her if you want Lieutenant Wedge.”
“Good, stay close Cletis,” Wedge told him.
“Is it a dead or alive warrant? That the best kind.”
“Where?” Wedge asked, turning to me.
“You want me to show you?” I asked him.
“Please,” he nodded and then said to Rikki, “Be right back, I hope.”
“I’ll call the undertaker and tell him to be ready for you!” Rikki shouted as we walked over to where I had seen BB.
“She not very optimistic is she?” Cletis chuckled.
“Nope,” Wedge shook his head.
“Around this corner,” I whispered to them and we saw her standing in the middle of the street.
“Well, you sure that’s her?” Wedge asked.
“Yeah I see her, she sweet on me, you want me to go distract her,” Cletis said. “And you can sneak around behind her.”
“No...we need to just take her in,” Wedge chuckled.
“I saw her at the dance on the fourth and someone said her name to her. Pretty sure that’s her,” I pointed out.
“That her, she recognizable,” Cletis nodded.
“Let’s go,” Cletis nodded and drew his guns.
I followed from a distance and Cletis said, “I think she scared speechless of you, Lt.”
“Hardly,” Wedge shook his head and looked to her, “Ma’am, we have a warrant for your arrest. Come peacefully.”
“What’s the matter, Trin? You afraid to help them?” Rikki asked me, following from behind.
“Just waiting for orders,” I shrugged.
“Sho ‘nuff do so you best listen to Lt. Wedge,” Cletis told her.
“She’s gone deaf, it seems,” Wedge sighed.
“Yeah, she don’t look all there but I just met her once. She was drunk and loud that time.”
“Dammit,” Wedge swore as I walk closer with a hand on my gun, just in case. “I don’t like people at my back.”
“I’m with you, Wedge. Even in a saloon I sit looking at the door.”
“Ali, clear the way please!” Wedge shouted.
“Maybe you slap her real hard she come out of it,” Cletis suggested.
“Well hell, now what?” Wedge asked.
“Dang, she pray or something?” Cletis asked. She looked more to me like she was sleeping against the crevice of the mountain.
“Well she’s here. We can’t rightly just walk away,” I looked from the woman to the others.
“True,” Wedge nodded.
“Wasn’t a dead or alive warrant? ‘Cause we could shoot her and walk away if it is,” Cletis wondered.
“Just pull a cage over to her and push her in,” Rikki suggested.
“Wedge you can show it to Cletis too I guess,” I suggested.
“What’s going on out here?” Ali called from inside a building nearby.
“I got a wagon over there a ways we could put her in but she look heavy.”
Wedge handed the warrant to Cletis and Rikki shouted back, “They gonna shoot an helpless woman!”
“Dang, ain’t a dead or alive warrant is it,” Cletis read the warrant over.
“Someone have a jail wagon?” Rikki asked.
“I got all kinds of wagons,” Cletis said, “but they a ways away.”
“I just wanna close this case,” I chuckled. “Didn’t think it’d be that easy.”
“Yeah, if she’s ‘there’,” Wedge sighed. “Well ...ma’am....we need to take you in...what’ll it be?”
“Red head always crazy,” Cletis commented.
“We are not always crazy!” Ali shouted.
“Most can be... true,” Wedge chuckled.
“That’s why I stuck with brunette,” I chuckled.
“Damn...she ain’t listening...now what?” Wedge asked.
“I think you all have the wrong person here,” Rikki pointed out. “I know BB, and this don’t look like her at all.”
“Pretty sure it’s the right one. Like I told Wedge, I heard someone saying her name at the dance,” I said. “And this sure as heck is her.”
“Rikki....now why should we trust you?” Wedge asked and I chuckled.
“I call Breezes Babii BB for short,” she said.
“That her she shot me the other day and all proud of it told me her name. Then Ansar took her to jail so that her alright,” Cletis nodded.
“See... a man never forgets the woman that shot him,” I nodded to Cletis.
“Well hell, if Ansar already took her to jail, then she should be clear of any warrant,” Rikki said.
“I’ll say,” Wedge nodded.
“He took her to jail for shooting Cletis. She shot Ansar after that. As the warrant clearly states,” I pointed out.
“This here is a helpless lady, she ain’t even with it, so you boys must have the wrong woman,” Rikki said.
“Helpless..my ass,” Wedge chuckled.
“If this was who you say, don’t ya think she would have already been shooting at yas?”
“Not are fault she been touched by the sun or something, don’t excuse her heatheness,” Cletis said.
“Probably standing there all quiet scheming till we turn our backs then she shoot us.”
“Ifn you think perhaps she’s been touched by the sun, reckon one of ya law folk should call for a doc!” Ali shouted.
“Sure.. AFTER we take her in!” Wedge called.
“You all just go on about your way, and leave her to me, I’ll see that she is taken care of proper like,” Rikki promised.
“Oh I’m sure you would,” I said to Rikki.
“Just look at her mr wedge. This poor woman needs medical attention, not your meanness.”
“Well we ain’t doctors so she just gonna have to settle for meanness,” Cletis said.
“I ain’t gonna let you mean people hurt this young lady.”
“Then encourage her to come peacefully,” I told her.
“We ain’t here to hurt her, we here to take her in with out incident,” Cletis insisted.
“Fine....we’ll charge you with obstruction...” Wedge said.
“I ain’t saying not to arrest the woman. It was one ya fella saying she looks like she perhaps was touched by the sun,” Ali shouted.
“Bre... step back please... it’s about to get ugly,” Wedge suggested.
“She needs a doctor, and now. Why don’t one of you boys go and fetch her one?” Rikki stepped between Wedge and BB.
“You could be useful and go fetch one,” I suggested. “If you cared so much.”
“Sure... after she’s arrested Rikki.... You know the drill,” Wedge told her.
“Our job to fetch her not doctors,” Cletis said. “So you go fetch a dr and bring us all something to drink when you come back,” he said and I chuckled at that.
“As a matter of fact Rikki... Call a doc now... if you are soooo caring for her... prove you ‘care’,” Wedge said.
“If I leave to get a doc, one of you just might shoot her, not giving her a chance.”
“Nope we cant just shoot her, go against our ranger oath,” Cletis said.
“She’d have a chance if she comes peacefully,” I said.
“Law don’t shoot without just cause,” Wedge pointed out.
“Yes you all do, I see it many times,” Rikki pointed out.
“We rangers not no regular law,” Cletis pointed out.
“Rikki...get out of the way,” Wedge told her.
“I can’t do that Wedge,” Rikki shook her head.
“Go on and fetch us something to drink,” Cletis told her.
“And I’m a detective asked by the marshal to solve this case,” I pointed out.
“IF she get hit cause you’re being a dern fool...who are you gonna blame then?” Wedge asked.
“You for drawing and shooting.”
“I will charge you with obstruction, Rikki.”
“And Cletis, go fetch us all a cool drink while you go and call for a doctor,” Rikki told him.
He chuckled and said, “We have a drink after, I got some shine I think you like Rikki.”
“And I will charge you with attempted murder if you draw and shoot,” Rikki promised.
“This ain’t your jurisdiction,” Cletis said. “So you got no authority here.”
“He is correct,” Wedge agreed. “We do.”
“And this ain’t the woman your looking for.”
“All of Arizona is ours,” Wedge said.
“Even Ghenna,” Cletis nodded.
“If you want to be so insistent, then just take her,” Rikki said.
“I wash ma hands of the matter, and you boys will answer for your actions,” Rikki promised.
“Sure... from Only the outlaws... who know nothing of law... but their own,” Wedge said.
“I think you all was seeing things,” Rikki said then.
I looked over and noticed that BB had disappeared while we’d been arguing. “Now what?” I looked to Wedge.
“You can answer to the sheriff here in town,” Rikki said. “As for me, I am going to Winslow.”
“Rangers don’t answer to no sheriffs any how,” Cletis told her.
“We don’t answer to anyone... but if we do... we’ll just let him... her know what we did,” Wedge promised. “Call it... courtesy.”
“You ain’t all powerful, ya know,” Rikki said.
“Nope, we ain’t, Rikki. We just know our jurisdiction. Unlike yourself.”
“Um hmm, and you think it is your right to impose on the towns local laws, well you better check with your boss,” Rikki said.
“We’ll let you do that,” Wedge chuckled.
“Well I’m gonna go have a drink and look for Mr. punk, sort of fun getting Ms. Rikki all riled up,” Cletis said then.
“Guess we just keep an eye out,” I looked to the men.
“I’ll be back around after a while. See ya’ll a bit later,” Cletis said and wandered off.
“Ain’t sure how she just slipped behind the mountains. We were all watchin’ her,” I said and we said goodbye to Cletis. Looking at Wedge I asked, “Now what?”
“Nothing. It’s dead, for now,” Wedge looked at me.
“I guess,” I sighed. “Sorry to waste your time too...”
“It’s never a waste of time,” he shook his head. “If you need us and we’re close by, call us.”
“Will do, thanks Wedge,” I nodded.
“Welcome.”
“Just sick of dang lack of help from anyone else,” I sighed.
“Amen to that, Trin, amen.”
“I need a drink. Saloon here any good?” I sighed.
“I don’t know... I have had a real drink in a long time.”
I waved to Wedge as he wandered back to the saloon and had a drink with Bree and Ali. We talked about the event going on in Winslow but I said that I would be going back to Tombstone. I waved to them and told Bree to send me a telegram if she saw BB again.
Tombstone.
Back in town, Wedge and I talked with Skyla about how much she missed her job. I told her I missed her too and we talked with Wedge’s sister who came over. I said goodnight after a while and wandered back home.
