Tombstone.
I walked down Allen Street and headed for the sheriff’s office, wanting an update on the situation with Starling and to see if there was any other cases that I needed to help out on. A huge spear pierced into the front porch of the office and I walked around it carefully to avoid getting poked in the eye. I knocked on the door and waited for Angel to open it for me.
“Hello Deputy... Sorry to interrupt if you’re busy,” I greeted her.
“Iz fine miz Trin come in if you vish,” she said with her thick German accent.
“Sure,” I walked in and closed the door behind her, seeing a girl sitting at the desk writing something and Victor standing there talking with them. “What’s with the spear?”
“Apavche are mad at zeh toen. Raided town vonce alvredy monday night.”
“Has Starling been rescued yet?”
“From vat she said she vasnt kidnapped or vatnot.”
“Excuse me?” I blinked.
“Was a big mess, but ve vill be going after Dancing Cloud and Ineda for killing Kristoff.”
I shook my head, thinking there must have been some mistake. “I’m sorry... As detective I was helping Jimmi figure out what was happening with his wife... So either way... Starling is back with her husband and all is well?” I looked at her.
“I understand iz a confuseing situation for all. I believe so. Avent heard othervise,” Angel nodded.
“That’s all that matters I guess..” I sighed.
Angel nodded to me and focused on the girl sitting down and asked, “Got any quvestions about being law miz Illy?”
“No Ma’am. Pretty straight forward,” she shook her head. “Is there a box for me to put the application in Sheriff?”
“Can juzt give it to me miz and I’ll make sure it getz to vho it needz to,” Angel said and took the application from her.
“We need more good law,” I smiled.
“That ve do,” Angel agreed.
“I’m Detective Trin Paige. I help out when they need an extra set of eyes on a case,” I introduced myself.
“Nice to meet you Detective. I’m Illy Kane.”
“Only aveing Matt about az a meatshield iz hard iz eazier vne Kriz iz here too,” Angel laughed.
“Haven’t seen Matt around lately,” I nodded to her.
“Hez been rezting. Got shot good in zeh leg lazt night,” Angel said. “Being az tall az he iz. Old man Bill got him good in the leg,” she chuckled.
“If i become law, you know you can’t go looking for revenge if I get shot, right?” Illy looked at Victor.
“I can...just not legally,” he replied. “I didn’t buy that gatling gun for nothing.”
“Ave ad to do it mineself manny of timez but i vas more then appy to arrezt gage,” Angel said.
“That and Angel knows me. If I do something wrong, all she has to do is point at the jail and I’ll go,” Victor said then.
‘You’re honest that way,” Illy smiled.
“Yup, I’m an oddball,” he nodded.
“Victor, right?” I looked at the man.
“HEY! She remembered this time!” he exclaimed.
“Hard to forget you with the white hair and eye patch,” Illy smiled.
“I am a detective,” I winked at him.
“Stickz out like a sore thumb,” Angel joked.
“Good thing I like odd,” Illy smiled.
“Well I knocked one case off tonight at least...”
“Vell I’m glad to help anytime miz Trin,” Angel nodded to me.
“You haven’t seen anyone goin’ round kissing women and robbing them, have you?” I looked at her.
“Hmm no not zat I’m avare of.”
“Might want to keep an eye on it.”
“Vill do.”
“And let me know if you hear of anything like that?”
“But vouldn’t end vel lfor zat man ifin he tried it on me. I keep a specail lipstick juzt for zat.”
“That’s... that’s just an odd statement in itself,” Victor said.
“He only does it on new women to the town,” I smiled.
“Vell dozent sound like lot. Miz Ivy vould kill him.”
“Hmm what else... I think that’s it for the cases in Tombstone.”
“Lot dosen’t usually outright KILL women either,” Victor pointed out. “Or rob.”
“Lot actually makes a fantastic witness,” I chuckled still at the irony.
“Only ven iz in hiz favor though,” Angel pointed out.
“I was prosecuting a case once and it felt really weird asking him forward as my lead witness,” I remembered. “Still makes me laugh. Even though we lost.”
“If it improves his ‘LOT’ in life he will do that,” Victor joked and I laughed.
“Had an interezting tlak vith him lazt ngiht about ugly girlz needing loving.”
“Good one. We like wit around here,” I chuckled at Vic still. “Has there been any warrants out on the benson sheriff’s office fire, Angel?”
“Dunnah. Benson varrants don’t come here. Only Bisbee an Tombstone.”
“Right, just wasn’t sure if you’d heard anything.”
“Naw I don’t uzally hear about zeh other townz. Got so much on my handz here.”
“Alright. Gonna ride around. Glad Starling’s home at least. Oh. Did you figure out why the bank was open and broken into yesterday? In Tombstone?”
“Sheriff, Detective. We’ll be seeing you,” Illy said then and headed for the door. We said goodbye to them and Angel closed the door so we could continue talking.
“No I didn’t hear anything on zat.”
“Couple of folks looked strange around but they could have been there after it happened. Inside door was wide open and vault too. Not sure if anything was taken. Hadn’t seen a banker.”
“Vell if you find anyvone vho vitnezzed anyhting pleaze send em my vay.”
“Yeah just ain’t sure if there’s a case there or if Bree just left it open. I’ll let you get to work then, Angel. Thanks for your help.”
“Take care, Trin.”
“Might want to work on this spear. Someone could fall over it. Could poke an eye out.”
“Yah I know iz annoying but cant get that darn thing out is good in there.”
I nodded and got on my horse, riding down the street. There was a group talking in front of Kate’s and I recognized Bill, Ben and Jan. The fourth man was the one who had been irritating me in front of the bank the day before.
“Pinky! Pinkerton!” he shouted out at me and I rode over towards them. “Uh ohhhhh everyone act normal.”
“Would you like something?”
“Yes. I would. I would like for you, to hold your breath for four minutes,” he said to me.
“And why would I do that?” I looked at the man, then noticed Ben winking at me and blowing me a kiss. “I think I deserve to know a name by now,” I stated.
“Miss. That has to be the ugliest horse i have ever seen...”
“Don’t speak about Jan like that. She ain’t that bad,” Bill said.
“By now? Did ya sleep with him and not get his name first?” Jan asked me.
“Oh, oh, this is great,” the man laughed at their replies.
“Ya’ll have a good night then,” I shook my head as I watched the man circle around my horse.
“Hey Pinkerton. I robbed the bank,” he said.
“Right you did. You gonna write a witness statement for the deputy?” I looked at him.
“Why would you even ask me a question like that...”
“Wouldn’t that be a confession?” Jan asked.
“Mmhmm,” I nodded.
“Well I didn’t really break into it... The guy who did left the money.”
“Forgive me if I don’t believe you but I’m having a hard time trusting a lot of folks lately,” I half looked at Ben.
“I would be having a hard time trusting your horse... That thing looks like it’s close to death.”
I hopped off Phoenix and called over to the sheriff’s office, “Hey Angel! Come out here a sec!”
Ben gave me a grin then and mouthed to me, “he be here soon. Sometime da month of June..’ I blinked at that and sighed, knowing he meant the kissing bandit.
Garth walked over then, looking at everyone with cold eyes but my focus was on the deputy as she came over from the office. “Everyhting alvright Trin?” she asked me.
“Angel, you remember me tellin’ you about the bank yesterday?” I asked and she nodded. I looked at the man who’d admitted his guilt and asked, “You wanna tell her what you just told me?”
“Yea, I told Trin I robbed the bank.”
“Have fun, Angel,” I winked at her.
“Vell then Javier, I’m going to ave to place you under arrezt.”
“Nah, you’re not,” Javier shook his head.
“Ganna come peacefully or not?” Angel moved her hands to her belt.
“Nah, I’m not. I can aim, guys. You don’t have to run to the side,” Javier said as the others started to move around.
Angel got up close to him and unclipped her holsters. “Either put your handz up or you ganna sling em on me?”
“Nah. I’m just gonna stand here and watch you think of something else to do.”
Angel pointed her guns at him and said, “You comming vone vay or another.”
“Shoot, ‘cause I’m not going.”
“Handz up,” Angel ordered.
“Jav?” I said then and he lowered his hands, turning toward me.
“Yes?”
“Well now I know your name,” I smiled.
“Jav isn’t my full name,” he said.
“It’s more than I had before.”
“Sling em and you vill be shot,” Angel warned him. “Lazt varning.”
“Would you just go peacefully with the deputy?” I begged him. “You already confessed.”
“How much time is that?” Jav asked. “I didn’t even rob that bank. So I’m kinda thinking twice right now.”
“You just said you did,” Angel and I said together.
“Yea I know but I’m still drunk,” he admitted. “So shut it.”
“Iz a good bit of time in zeh cellz. So either put your handz up and come peacefully or ve do it zeh hard vay.”
Jav pulled his guns then and he and Angel ran around the street firing at each other. Bill got hit in the crossfire and I backed up, knowing I couldn’t do anything because Angel hadn’t deputized me.
“Trin, draw your guns,” Javier said to me and I wondered where he’d heard my name.
“Nope. I ain’t law,” I said and walked into the saloon to avoid getting shot like Angel had been.
“Nope but you’re a snitch. Either fight me or take a shot in the leg. One shot in the leg... Actually it’ll be two. Because I can’t control just one,” he laughed.
I ran out of the saloon and ran over to Angel. “Angel, deputize me,” I said as Javier aimed his guns high. “Angel.”
She wearily reached over and pulled a small badge from her belt, offering it to me. I took the badge from her and pulled my guns, drawing on Javier.
“Trin, I’m not gonna shoot ya,” he laughed. “Ohh there ya go. Fire then.”
I shot and fired at him but then felt the bullets rip through my leg, as promised. I fell to the ground in pain and swore loudly as Angel lay on the ground beside me still.
“I said I wasn’t going to shoot you,” Javier said. “You just couldn’t help ya self.”
Victor grunted a few swears and pulled off his bandana, tying it around my leg. “Hold down on that, ma’am,” he advised and I did as I was told.
“We need... hospital... doctors...” I moaned at the pain. “I can’t... walk...” I looked at Victor and he lifted me up, carrying me to the clinic where he set me down on one of the beds. While we waited for doctors to come heal us, Garth came in with a sword and wanted to amputate Angel’s arm but Matthew came in and got rid of him. Jess finally arrived and started to work on my leg when a dust storm hit town we were transferred to Goldfield. While in the army tent of a clinic, Lill came to assist healing Angel and Jess continued to work on my leg, though it seemed to take forever. When the bullets were finally taken out, I got a crutch and hobbled home.
