June 20, 1900

Black Diamond.

I walked outside this morning and saw Sabi sitting with Ger and Sugar in front of the gardens. I sighed, having the feeling I should get used to that image as Sabi would probably be hanging around them more often. We talked for a while about how Aly had been made Sheriff and how thrilled I was about that. Sabi said that Aeryne was thinking about being a deputy. Sabi talked about how Lot was such a nice man and I made a comment about Ben being deceptively nice but then stayed quiet.

I received a telegram from Angeles requesting my assistance in investigating a fire at the ladies’ society headquarters and walked over to Pet and Sugar. “Hey ladies. Pet... I got a telegram from Angeles asking me to look into the ladies society fire. You hear about that at all?”

“Ladies society fire? What?” Sugar looked at me curiously.

“Oh yes, yes Trin.. I thought the Marshal had gotten in touch with you. I do have some photographs to show you. It’s a travesty!” Pet exclaimed.

“All I know is there was a fire and Angeles wants me to work with Kris on it. I figure since Pet is so involved in the society she would know.”

Pet reached into her bag and pulled out three photos for me and handed them over.

“Oh my gosh, that’s awful,” Sugar shook her head.

“Who was all there when it happened, Pet?”

“I’m hoping they find the person.”

“Pet... who was around when it happened? What do you know?” I asked her, trying to get her to focus.

“Yes, indeed,” Sugar nodded. “If you can excuse me a moment.. I need to go take care of some paperwork I need to do,” Sugar said and walked away.

Amara walked over then and Pet explained, “I was in Tuscan visiting friends. I have no idea what happened. I was informed by Kris two days ago. He said the Pinkerton’s are looking into it.”

“That’d be me,” I smiled. “I haven’t been able to get in touch with him yet.”

“Has anyone given you helpful information yet?” she asked.

“Nope I just started working it this morning. You were the first person I wanted to talk to because you’re usually so involved with it.”

“You need to talk to Angeles,” Amara said then.

“Well I’m glad. Angeles is an upstanding member of the Ladies Society,” Pet said.

“Yeah well... She was standing there when it happened,” Amara said.

“Angeles was? Oh dear... she wasn’t hurt, was she?” Pet asked.

“Sounds like my lead witness then,” I observed. “What else do you know, Amara?”

“According to Kris she stood there as a ranger and did nothing... he was very upset and called us a bunch of names. Said we was no good and kicked me and Mickey out of the sheriffs office.”

“Like when you stole Alex’s patient from under his nose yesterday when he was trying to heal Sabi?” I asked. “You just pulled the girl on your horse when he was trying to help her breathe. Took her off to the clinic when he was right there, obviously helping the girl.”

“Are you kidding me?” Amara blinked.

“Are you talking about the fire of the Ladies Society or when Garth blew up the Undertaker’s office,” Pet said. “He was distraught about Mac’s death rumors. I heard ringing in my ears for a day or so. She stood there and did nothing. I was flat on the ground.”

“You was?” Amara asked.

“It knocked me clear off my feet Friday night. She didn’t pursue when he rode away. Didn’t come check on me either.”

“Oh Pet, I’m sorry,” Amara gasped.

“I’m going to have to go to Tombstone it looks like.”

“Well, she did pursue, but not to apprehend,” Pet thought out loud. “Well maybe not in a legal sense.” Pet looked to me and said, “The Ladies Meeting Hall is a shambles still. I need to speak with Joe about making us new furnishings.”

“I’ll see you folks later,” I sighed. “Not gonna stand here and get yelled at for asking for clarification.”

“See you Trin. I’ll be in town momentarily. I need to speak to Joe,” Pet said and I walked away before I said something more I would regret.
