Tombstone.
I walked over to the office in Tombstone this morning and heard Ben Cravens talking to a woman. “Here you have Pinkertons and the shop next to that. You just came down stairs didn’t you?”
“Someone say Pinkertons?” I walked over to them and they laughed.
“Well, I am showing Star around. You’ll be seeing her in my company a lot in the future,” Ben told me and then introduced. “Star, this is Trin. A Pinkerton.”
“Hello Trin, nice to meet you,” Star said to me.
“Nice to meet you, Star. Ben... I was wondering... you know anything about the money that Sabi found in front of the orphanage here a while back?” I asked.
“Now, why should I know anything about that?” Ben asked.
“Just curious if you’d heard anything,” I chuckled.
“Such a good honest law abiding citizen like me? You slur my good name,” he winked at Star.
“I wasn’t accusin’ no one, just asking if you knew anything,” I chuckled. “He’s so touchy.”
“You and that husband of yours. Sheesh. Your all paranoid about me now.”
“Husband? I’m married? Was I not invited to another secret marriage of mine?” I looked at him.
“Who was the man you were with when you put me in the cell?”
“I never put you in no cell, Ben. That ain’t my job. I’m merely the informant.”
“Oh really? Thats interesting to know,” Ben said.
“So you don’t know anything about the money that was found here by Sabi?”
“Saying nothing. Let her keep it if you ask me. Good on her.”
“Did you lose some money Ben?” Star asked.
“Sabi is one of the children here, Star,” Ben explained.
“Alright then. Well, I have some more people to find before I sing in Bisbee at 1 so I’ll hopefully see ya’ll there,” I told them.
“No. I know how much I have sweetheart,” Ben smiled.
“That sounds like fun Trin, I love music,” Star said to me.
“Maybe,” Ben touche the brim of his hat.
“Hope to see you there then!” I smiled. “Good day, folks,” I waved and headed down the street as they said goodbye. I saw a couple of men talking in front of the hotel and greeted them, “Ben, Trent, howdy gentlemen.”
“A deep thinking type of day?” Trent asked Ben.
“Ben, was wondering if you’d written up a statement for us yet?” I asked him.
“Yep, lots to think on,” Ben nodded and looked at me. “Yes ma’am,” he said and pulled it out of his pocket, handing it to me.
“Excellent. Now we have something to work with,” I winked at him. “So Trent, how are you doin’?”
“I am good miss thank you, and yourself?”
“Oh, I’m doin’ alright. Getting ready to sing at Bisbee Stock Exchange in half an hour.”
“Golly wow!” Trent exclaimed.
“Mmhmm! You should come on over. We have a great time!” I smiled.
“It okay if I come listen?”
“Definitely!” I nodded.
“Thank you miss. And I think the theater folks say break a leg... But I don’t mean nothing bad by that,” Trent smiled.
“You’re so sweet, Trent,” I chuckled and winked at him.
“I reckon I should tend to a few things before I head out that way then. Thank you kindly,” Trent smiled and scuffed the ground. “Please excuse me.”
“I should head to Bisbee. See you soon, Trent,” I winked at him. “And thanks, Ben,” I nodded and headed off towards Bisbee.
Bisbee.
I played piano in Bisbee and sang and there was a good group of people there. I noticed Angi sitting in the quiet with a friend and they had been talking throughout my set. I had heard the word ‘noose’ and grew curious. When I was finished playing I walked over there and said, Thank you all for being here. Angi, did I hear something about a noose?”
“Yeah, I had a .. ummm run in with a bad fella,” Angi blushed.
“Did they catch him?” I asked and she started to well up, swallowing hard. “Angi... You know I work with the law, right? We can bring justice for you.”
“I’m fine, Trin,” Angi insisted.
“He needs to be brought to justice. Taken to jail.”
“Right now, I still got my tongue, and I’m alive... I ain’t gonna risk that by sayin’ who,” Angi said.
“Well,” I sighed. “If you feel like you want to talk and get justice for yourself.. You know where to find me.”
“Just too risky,” she shook her head. “Thanks, Trin.”
“Trent, thank you for coming,” I looked at Trent.
“I enjoyed it very much.”
“Guess I’ll just head home then. Thanks ya’ll for bein’ here!” I smiled and headed home.
