August 22, 1900

Pearce.

This morning I received a note from Natalie on my bed when I woke up. I took it and read the note, sitting on the bed while I processed the information:

We were riding home and saw Mr Garth with Stormy and Mr Mike on the tracks. Miss Aeryne lay on the ground. We heard people yelling in the house next door and then Mr Garth yelled about being hired and putting fire to the house to get them out. Then he made the house go in flames!

Natalie

I set the note in my pocket and ran outside, looking for some sort of lawman who could work in Pearce. I saw Jimmi wandering around town and walked over to him. “Hey Jimmi...”

“Good morning Trin.”

“How are you, Jimmi?”

“I’m good and you?”

“A little concerned actually...”

“Oh?”

“I need to find a lawman who can work in Pearce. S’pose that would be marshals and rangers at this point.”

“Well any Marshal or Ranger could help. A marshal would be better though.”

“Was an incident of arson next door to my house last night. I was away but Natalie witnessed it and left me a note. She and Jimmy watched it from our balcony. She recognized Mr. Garth as the one who set it.”

“Ugh Garth... I just signed a Tombstone warrant for him.”

“She said Miss Aeryne’s body was on the ground too. Stormy and Mike were there.”

“Was she hurt?”

“She didn’t say about that in the note. Just said Aeryne was laying on the ground. She said Mr Garth mentioned something about being hired...”

“This will be Stormy from Black Diamond and Ranger Mike too? Hired!!” he exclaimed.

“That was my reaction too,” I nodded. “I can put money on what happened but it would be an educated guess.”

“Dig deeper Agent.. see what you find out.”

“That’s the plan,” I nodded. “I don’t like what I’m hearing though. I know a couple of outlaws live next door to me... I pray Natalie has not met them yet though.”

“Well when you get to the bottom of it, come see me with your report and I will see what the next steps are.”

“Well I’ll need to find a marshal or ranger first I guess... Then they would come to you to sign the warrant.”

“Yes, be sure to use a US Marshal or Deputy Marshal.. not Kristoff, he is local to Tombstone town only.”

“Just hate the idea of all this happenin’ right next door... In front of Natalie... She could hardly sleep last night. Oh be rest assured, Ansar is the person I’m looking for.”

“I’m sure he will be around later today or tomorrow.”

“I certainly hope so. I’m afraid for Natalie... This has scared her quite a bit.”

“How old is little Natalie?”

“She’s only nine, Jimmi. Terrible to watch the house next to ours go up in flames...”

“Yes and very inquisitive too.”

“She reads quite a bit... And loves to learn languages.”

“I suggested she should chase butterflies or go fishing yesterday. She didn’t seem impressed.”

“She has been through a lot in her short life. The woman who was almost going to be her mother, back in the town she was before Tombstone... Was killed in front of her by some outlaws. Because she didn’t wear a gun. I think she’s afraid to get attached to other women like that.”

“Well a gun isn’t the kind of accessory most ladies wear.”

“I know...” I nodded. “I think she was more worried that Mr. Cole didn’t wear one, she told me.”

“Doves maybe, but they are well.. umm.. not my kind of lady,” Jimmy said and I chuckled at that.

“Joe built the kids a boat and she was sailing around with him and Swift Fox in the pond here.”

“That’s good, if she has seen too much in nine years she needs to see what she has missed.”

“Exactly. All I can do is give her a good life here.”

“Butterflies are nice and I do like the ones in Lilly’s garden there.”

“But watching houses burn down doesn’t help.”

“Pearce, thats darned strange. It’s so quiet in Pearce even the dead complain.”

“I know... I moved here for the peace and quiet. Now my child witnesses arson. And possibly
murder.”

“She was talking about guns and bodies yesterday. I asked Deputy Ty to talk to her. Or was it the day before. He is a Black Diamond deputy, he may help you.”

“I’ve never taken care of a child, Jimmi. I talked with him and Aeryne the other day as well. I think he’ll be a great fit there.”

“Ah kids are easy. just feed them and give them some chores to tire them out. They look after themselves.”

“She’s hoping to help out Alex and Lilly in the clinics.”

“That will work.. making tea and cleaning.”

“She’s quite into reading... She was helping out at the library but said it’s very quiet there.”

“Yes, I have to get those court records sorted out for that library. The Mayor asked me to a long time back but things just interrupt.”

“Maybe you could get her to help you out with that.”

“Better see how my wife is too. You have to excuse me Trin.”

“How is the baby?”

“Eating like a horse. Garry, my biddy giant.”

“Thanks for stopping to talk, Jimmi. Have a great day!”

“Oh! Zannza is up tomorrow afternoon; hope you can help out.”

“Ah I will hope to be a key witness for that but it will depend on situations here of course. What time is the trial for?”

“Starts between four and five.”

“Alright. I may or may not be able to attend. You have my extensive report if nothing else.”

“I do... big reading,” he sighed.

“You’re welcome,” I winked.

“An afternoon at my desk. You keep safe, Trin.”

“You too,” I nodded and walked into town.

Tombstone.

I leaned against the post in front of the sheriff’s office for a while then, trying to process all that Natalie had told me in her note. Alex walked over and greeted me. “Hey Trin!”

“Hey Alex! How are you hon?”

“I’m great,” he smiled. “How are you?”

I leaned back on the post and asked, “Honestly? I’m worried about Natalie.”

“What’s wrong?”

“She witnessed arson last night. Possibly murder,” I said and he raised his eyebrows. “She and Jimmy rode home last night to Pearace.. I was away doing business at the office. They heard Garth yell that he was hired to get someone out of a house next door. Two outlaws live there, that I know. Natalie said that Sabi’s old parents were there, Stormy and Mike. She said she saw Aeryne’s body on the ground but didn’t know if she was alive or not.”

“Oh wow, that must have been scary for her.”

“They ran into the house to stay safe and then went up on the balcony to watch as Garth set fire to the house next door.”

“That poor kid...”

“She hardly slept last night, Alex.”

“I hope she’s ok.”

“I’m not sure she is...”

“Maybe she just needs something to get it off her mind.”

“I really need your help with her. I’m beginning to get overwhelmed... It’s hard looking after a girl by yourself... Having never cared for a child before... Especially one who’s so inquisitive and intelligent and perceptive as Natalie.”

“She can always help me. The clinics need to be cleaned thoroughly every day and I could use help with that.”

“I really hope that she can help you with that. It would take her mind off the rest of all this...”

“And I could teach her stuff too.”

“She told me Jimmy wanted to go out and fight the fire but by the time they got down there it was out.”

“She was terrified of losing him, Alex.”

“Yeah a kid shouldn’t go anywhere near a house fire.”

“And why on earth would someone hire Garth to be involved in something against other outlaws?? The woman needs to be fired. Not to mention what the hell was she doing in Pearce??” I tried to calm down, but I was starting to get too upset.

“Don’t ask me. I don’t understand outlaws,” I shrugged. “Hey, you want a cup of coffee or something?”

“Yeah, maybe that’s what I need. I was just waiting around in case Ansar comes by,” I said, walking over to him. “I’m losing it, Alex.”

“It’ll be okay, Trin,” he hugged me tightly and I didn’t let go. “Come on, let’s get that coffee. And a splash of whiskey if you need it. My treat.”

“Will it? They let sheriff’s hire outlaws to fight against other outlaws. My kid witnessed a fire... Almost lost her best friend in it...” I nodded tearfully, wiping the tears away. “And now Zan’s going to court tomorrow and I probably won’t be able to be there because I have to be out of town. So all that hard work I did... If they even use my report...”

“I know, it doesn’t feel like it right now.”

“Everything’s a mess, Alex. Nat’s scared what Payton will do next...”

“Whiskey!” he tugged me towards the saloon.

“Yeah... whiskey,” I nodded and walked over to the saloon with him, kicking open the swinging doors. Alex poured a couple of shots for us and handed me the glass of whiskey. “Trin, Nat will be okay. Kids bounce back better than adults. She might be a little upset for awhile, but she’ll get through it.”

“It’s hard doing this alone, Alex.”

“You’re not alone, Trin. I can always help you.”

“What do you say to a girl who can’t sleep because she sees flames when she closes her eyes?”

“You distract her with something else, something fun and silly.”

“Like the boat Joe made her... or the bike Rye gave her...”

“Exactly! She was really excited about that boat.”

“And give her work with you... something to do to occupy her mind and challenge her still. She’s getting bored being all alone at that library.”

“Next time it’s bed time, start by telling her an adventure with the boat. You’re good at telling stories.”

“That’s a good idea.”

“Yes, she can come work with me any time. I’ll tire her out so that she’ll have no choice but to sleep.”

“Thank you, Alex... I appreciate that...” I smiled at him.

“Any time, Trin. I’m always her for you,” he smiled back.

“Jimmi was talking about how he needed to get the court reports into the library. I told him to ask Natalie for help with that.”

“That’s a good idea.”

“She would find that fascinating.”

“She’s a smart girl and can read and write. That’s not that common here.”

“Now she just has to want to go back to school.”

“That’s a hard one. I took her to school a few weeks ago.”

“She told me about the microscope,” I smiled. “Nora was the teacher then?”

“Yes the teacher didn’t show up so Nora read her report on the planets. It was a good report.”

“That explains why she got to sit with Jimmy that time then.”

He poured me another whiskey and I asked how things were with him. He said he was doing really well and I said that things were better with me and Aly. He looked at me and asked, “How are things with Thomas?”

“Thomas... Well it’s interesting.. I think he might become a defense lawyer. He was keen on defending Payton in court if it ever came to that.”

“Defense lawyers are needed too.”

“I know... It’ll just make it interesting between us if we ever have to work against each other. I ran into a couple of people that I knew back in Bear River the other day...”

“Oh yeah?”

“Well... the woman anyway. I knew her husband better but haven’t reunited with him yet.”

“Oh nice.”

“They used to be natieves in Bear River, where I stayed with the Cherokee for a while. Things didn’t end well there for me, but Cole was one of the ones who was always supportive of me and tried to look out for me. Even if the others didn’t understand why I was there. I’m looking forward to seeing him again.”

“That’s great.”

“It’s nice when some things from your past can be healed, isn’t it?

“It certainly is. I have to take a ride over to Benson and pick up a statement for Aly. You’re welcome to come with me.”

“Sure, I wouldn’t mind wandering out there. She’s got you doin’ work, huh?” I winked at him.

“Yeah, she got shot last night so I told her she has to stay home and rest today.”

“Oh right, I did see her in the clinic.”

We headed outside and got on our horses and rode out to Benson. I was impressed with him that he knew exactly where to go.

Benson.

In Benson, Alex asked Zeth for a witness statement he needed for Aly. They talked about cake that Zeth had given Aly and I joked with Alex about trying to figure out Zeth’s family tree because it was so complicated. I decided to ride home and let them continue to talk.

Tombstone.

I walked to Allen Street and saw Conway and Thomas in front of Kate’s. “Howdy gentlemen.”

“Well good evening Miss Trin. How are you this fine evenin?” Thomas looked at me with a smile.

“Evenin, Ma’am,” Conway greeted me.

“I... I’m alright I suppose. How are you two doing?”

“Pretty good so far,” Conway nodded.

“Doing alright thanks. What are you up to this fine evening?” Thomas asked.

“Trying to see what I can find out about last night’s events in Pearce... Possibly find Payton.. and if I’m lucky, find Ben Cravens or Xavior and compare prints.”

“What happened in Pearce? How are things going with Payton?”

“Natalie and Jimmy watched the house next door go up in flames last night.. From our living room.”

“They did WHAT?” Thomas exclaimed.

“I heard the Darkwolf brothers killed a sheriff....And I know for a fact they shot Lisa...and they allegedly kidnapped a deputy from Diamond....” Conway said.

“They’re the ones who live next to me,” I blinked, hearing Conway. “Natalie said something about Garth wanting them to come out but they wouldn’t. He said he was hired to get them out. So when they didn’t, he set the house on fire.”

“Oh no!” Thomas shook his head.

“Natalie and Jimmy watched from our balcony.”

“Did the brothers survive?” Conway asked.

“Is your house ok? It didn’t get burned did it?” Thomas wondered.

“She barely slept at all last night. Kept seeing the flames when she closed her eyes... I’m worried about her. No, my house is fine... I’ve no idea about the brothers.”

“I haven’t seen or heard from Jimmy at all today,” Thomas observed.

“I’d like to know what idiot hired an outlaw to set another outlaw’s house on fire,” I muttered. “Though Natalie said that Stormy and Mike were there.”

“Hard tellin’,” Conway nodded.

“So I’d put money on it bein’ them because Stormy and Garth are kin. And she don’t really care if he’s an outlaw or not,” I sighed.

“I don’t know, but it sounds like something fishy is happening there,” Thomas observed.

“It ain’t right,” I nodded. “I moved to Pearce because it was more peaceful. Now my kid’s watchin’ outlaws burn down houses.”

“Don’ know....I didn’t see anything about a fire....this is the first I heard of it....” Conway said.

I started to tremble again at the sight Natalie must have seen and how close it was to my house.

“Have you taken a look at the place yet since it burned? Any signs of what really happened?” Thomas asked.

“Natalie said she watched Garth throw tinder on the house and set a match,” I looked at him and wrapped my arms around myself, feeling my body shaking with nervousness.

Thomas put his arm around comfortably. “I cant believe that did that in front of kids. No wonder Jimmy hasn’t been around. And if there was someone shot or killed, that makes it worse.” I leaned my head against Thomas’ shoulder, hiding against him.

“Good afternoon, Trin,” Rye’s voice made me step back.

“Maybe he didn’t know the kids were around....not that that would stop him....” Conway wondered.

“Rye, hello...” I tried to compose myself and saw her husband standing beside her. “Cole... So nice to see you again.”

“We were not interrupting anything were we?” they asked with concern.

“I was just telling the gentlemen about the house next to mine getting burned down last night.. In front of my daughter.. And her best friend.”

“That’s not good,” Cole frowned.

“They watched it happen from the balcony. Natalie hasn’t slept since. Thomas, darling, these are old friends of mine from Bear River. This is Rye and Cole Portland. And this here on the chair behind us is Conway,” I introduced.

“We just settled in Bisbee,” Rye said then.

“Rye, Cole... This is my um...” I looked at Thomas, not sure what to call him yet.

“Your... intended?” Cole grinned.

“You know me too well, my friend,” I chuckled at that and saw Thomas blushing a bit.

“By the way Trin the home is now furnished and unpacked if you care to come visit for some tea soon.”

“Perhaps we could all go in and get a drink? Conway, you’re welcome to join us. I would love to see your place, Rye! Glad to hear you got settled in okay,” I smiled at her.

“I would like that thank you,” Rye nodded. “A drink would be rather nice.”

“Yes it would..was dry out on the trail,” Cole nodded.

“Hey there kiddo... Want to join us in Kate’s?” I saw Payton walk over then.

“Trin, there is Payton. You did say you were looking for her,” Thomas observed.

“Yes, I did indeed,” I nodded.

“No ma’am.. have ta get cleaned up,” Payton shook her head.

“Payton, hon, can I ask you a question first?” I asked her.

“Good evening Miss Payton, how are you?” Thomas asked.

“I am fine Mr Thomas thank you.. yes Miss Trin..” Payton curtsied and nodded.

“Do you know much about conversations between Rikki and Miss Ashton about um... horse transportin’?” I asked Payton.

She sighed softly and looked down at her feet. “A bit...”

Cole and Payton introduced themselves to each other and I nodded to her. “Maybe we could talk about it sometime when you’re not busy?”

“Sorry fer bein so dirty .. was cleanin up the marshal’s office an jail cells,” Payton said and nodded to me. I have.. a lot ta talk about...”

“Alright. We’ll meet when you have more time, kiddo,” I nodded to her.

We walked into the saloon as Thomas and Payton stayed in the street to talk. We talked about Bisbee and how much they were enjoying it there. The dog Susie came in to join us and we talked about how much Natalie enjoyed the bike they had given her. Rye expressed her interest in the orphanage and then stepped outside to take care of something.

“So I see you got your wish,” Cole smiled at me

“My wish?”

“Pinkertons?”

“Yes, I did. Actually I was a Pinkerton when I was in Georgetown, near Bear River... That’s where it all began. But now... I am a respected Pinkerton. They have asked my assistance on several cases and also providing information for court. Been the only female detective here in Arizona for over a year now.”

“Very good... knew you would be good at it..”

“Thank you, Cole... That means a lot. I was trying to prove myself to folks at the time of Bear River. Here... I think I’ve finally accomplished proving my worth around here.”

Rye came back in and I told her, “We were just talking about how I had started as a Pinkerton when I met ya’ll.. But now they’re actually using me as a key witness in court. Almost to the same calibre of a deputy’s statement.”

“Being a news reporter was good practice,” Cole smiled.

“There is a massively big trial tomorrow scheduled for a case I worked hard on... I’m almost relieved I won’t be able to make it,” I said.

“Oh?” Cole looked at me.

“When we began... It looked like my friend was guilty of theft and murder. But it turned out that someone else was involved who was framing her for the theft... And my friend killed that woman in self defense. So what started as a case for the prosecution turned into me helping the defense. The report is... Long,” I chuckled.

“Happens when it is concise,” Cole nodded.

“Indeed, they appreciated my detail. But if I were there as a witness I would be on the stand for over an hour, I’m sure.”

We talked for a while about what they would be doing now that they were living in Tombstone and Cole mentioned he was interested in working with the horses as a veterinarian possibly and I remembered how good he was with the horses at the village. We talked about their daughter Kit who had always been welcoming to me and Cole said she may join them in Tombstone.
We talked about the incident last night and how overwhelmed I was about it all, not sure how to deal with Natalie’s fears. Cole said that I had to stay strong and that maybe I could let her sleep with me for a few nights until she felt better about things.

Pearce.

I suggested that we take a walk to Pearce where I could show them my house. We arrived in Pearce and I made them a glass of tea as we talked about the children in town and how much Cole and Rye had warmed up to them. We talked about the best ways to relate to children and how they hoped to adopt some day.

Cole headed home to rest early and Rye stayed behind a bit. We talked about the incident with Natalie in school when Traci had pulled her hair and she suggested I talk with her teacher. She said goodnight as well and headed home, thanking me for the visit.

August 21, 1900

Tombstone.

“This morning I walked out of my office and saw a woman with a dog near the orphanage. I walked over to her and noticed something familiar about her but couldn’t quite place it. “Hello there ma’am. Nice dog ya got there.”

“Oh greetings, ma’am. Thank you,” she turned towards me.

“Don’t believe we’ve met yet. I’m Detective Trin Paige.”

“Pleasure. I am Rye,” she smiled. “My husband Cole and I are new to Bisbee.”

“Oh lovely! I’ve always liked Bisbee. Great little town.”

“I have found it quite welcoming,” she smiled.

“And what’s the name of this dog?”

“And this little girl is Susie,” she looked down at the dog.

I went over to hold my hand for the dog and said, “Hey there girl.” The dog licked my hand and I smiled, petting her.

“She was adopted by little Jeffery at the orphanage, but Jeffery is afraid that the matron will not let him keep her.”

“Oh I see... I’ve heard bad things about the new matron.”

“So we told Susie she could stay with us and visit when we came to see the children.”

“That’s perfect,” I smiled.

“Well I hope when we are established, I am able to assist the matron with the children. Cole and I spent time with them last night and we fell in love with them.”

“Yes the children are adorable. I’ve got one living with me now actually.... The matron before this one was somewhat cruel to her and I didn’t like how she was being treated so I took her in.”

“Well Cole and I have considered adopting a few of them...” she dropped her head then. “Our children were killed in a house fire when we lived in colorado. Outlaws ransacked out home and burned it and our field to the ground.”

“I lived in Colorado before as well... Outlaws were awful there,” I nodded.

“Yes, so we moved here and we love it so much. A new beginning. New people. Maybe a new family.”

“It is fantastic for that. I’ve been here just over a year now and love it. Was a fresh start for me as well though I still do the same job.”

“Well I am still trying to find my way here. Maybe when we settle I will be in search of work.”

I got dizzy watching the dog running around and leaned down to pet her. “I wish we all had energy like this dog.”

“Oh yes, so do I,” Rye giggled.

“So you’re hoping to help out with the orphanage then? The orphanage could use some help, I imagine, and sounds like you love children. Or you could be a teacher too. They have school twice on Saturdays. I just have to convince my uh... daughter I guess she is... to go back to school. She’s quite reluctant to.”

“No wonder why the kids hate adults school twice on Saturdays.”

“Made no sense to me either,” I chuckled.

“Natalie just refuses to go now. The teacher last weekend was.... not the nicest to her and I’m not sure what to do.”

“Me either... Poor children,” Rye shook her head. “Well you can let Natalie know where I live. I will teach her what I can.”

“She needs to be in school but she won’t go back now. I think she might be helping in the clinic from time to time. She seems interested in learning.”

“Well she did mention wanting to help with the newspaper to Cole and I last evening.”

“Ah yes that as well.”

“I admire her energy. I just fell in love with her...but you can tell her Mr Cole and I now have fire arms because of her....,” she whispered. “He wants to take her shopping for a sling shot.”

“She will adore you even more for that then,” I laughed at that. “She seems quite insistent that everyone should be able to protect themselves. Especially after what happened in Mississippi...”

“I told him we would have to ask her parents though,” Rye smiled.

“Well I think she’s smart enough to know what to do with a slingshot. Her best friend Jimmy already has one.”

“An with what happened in Colorado for us... Natalie is right. Well we just did not want to upset you if we did buy her one.”

“Thank you for asking me first, “I nodded. “She’s a great little girl... Honestly don’t know what I would do without her now.”

“No thanks needed. I would want someone to ask me first as well. And she is now our little friend and welcome to our home anytime.”

“I will let her know that,” I smiled. “She might call you aunt and uncle.”

“I would honestly like that... and I know so would Cole...”

“Wait.... Cole... What was your last name?” I looked at her, having a realization.

“Portland.”

I blinked and looked at her with surprise. “Cole Portland!!!!? As in the one married to Gemini portland?? From Bear River Cherokee tribe?” I wasn’t sure if I was happy about the news or cautious, seeing how things had ended with the Cherokee.

“Yes, Cole and Gemini,” she lowered her head. “Gemini passed away many years ago from a illness.”

“I knew them both... When I was running from an outlaw named Buu and another one named Bill. They were very kind to me but the majority of the tribe... not so much. The chief almost......” I sighed and looked down.

“Cole is very accepting of every man and woman. He did not see the evil that others thought they did.”

“The undertaker Icca had shot at the chief. The chief was not happy about this and in spite my attempts to save him from Icca again, the chief never once thanked me. Then he wanted me to tell him where to find the undertaker and said he would burn the whole town down. Didn’t matter that I was there.”

“Those days are in the past Trin. New days new beginnings,” she reached over to take my hand.

“I left before anything went down. But your husband was always the flicker of kindness in that tribe. I’m sorry to hear about Gemini. I’m sorry... it was over fifteen years ago but I hear a name from that time and I am taken right back there in my memory.”

“It was hard on the family with gems loss.”

“I can imagine,” I nodded.

“Yes it has many moons since then.”

“I cannot wait to see him again. Is he still with a tribe or have you broke off from the Native groups?”

“Well I think Cole is out gather food or looking for work.”

“I won’t be able to sit down and chat long. Unfortunately I have some business I need to get to. But be assured we will all sit down and chat soon! I can’t wait to see him again!”

“Yes of course. Well we are in the big red house on the hill in Bisbee. Please stop in anytime for tea.”

“Ah yes, lovely. I definitely will come and find you.”

“Please. It’s been a long time Trin. It is so great to see you again.”

Rye stepped over to give me a hug and I sighed against her, wondering if the past would really be in the past as I headed back to the office.

***

This afternoon I walked into the clinic and found Zeth and Aly laying on the beds. I saw Viper standing in the middle of the room and Joan gave me a look as I walked over to Aly’s bed.

“You alright hon?” I asked her.

“Yeahhh!” she giggled loudly and I smirked, guessing she was on medication that was making her act differently.

“She gonna be okay, Jess?” I asked but Jess was busy taking care of Zeth.

“Who shot ya, hon?” I asked Aly but she managed to stand and moved close to Viper so I stepped back.

“This ain’t over. If i weren’t so incapacitated I’d be all over ya right now. and not in a good way,” she threatened him.

“In your dreams, swine,” Viper laughed.

“You gonna talk to a sheriff like that, Sir?” I walked over to them.

“I assure you, you ain’t in my dreams,” Aly rolled her eyes and walked past him, bumping his shoulder roughly.

“All law are swine in my eyes....” Viper grinned and I walked past him, heading out after Aly.

I followed Aly into the sheriff’s office and saw Conway standing in the cells, watching over David who was sitting on a bed in a cell.

“Thank you Conway for your assistance with him. Where we at?” Aly asked Conway.

“Oh my gosh, I hate nosey people, “David muttered.

“You’re welcome,” Conway nodded.d

“Who is nosey?” Aly asked.

“Hey there, Dave,” I said to him.

“The Pinky,” Dave glared at me. “Who invited the pinky?”

“Picture is crystal clear now. I’ll be outside, Aly,” I chuckled. “If you need me.”

“Get use to it, She’s my best friend,” I heard Aly say as I walked out of the office. I smiled at that and leaned against the post, getting comfortable.

Laurie and Zeth walked over and I talked with Zeth about the gunfight, but he seemed to be fine aside from a bit of a bruise to his ego. Jimmy walked over and asked if Payton was going to jail but I assured him that she wasn’t. He seemed thrilled at that news and then Joan walked over to us and thanked me for how we had handled the situation with Payton.

Bree walked over to us then and told us about TJ coming to shoot law and Joan said that her general was being held hostage. Neither of them good give me a location of the incident, though, so I wasn’t sure how to help or if I could. Joan suggested Jimmy go back to the ranch and he said goodbye, running back home.

“There’s not much I can do as a detective. This is more your department, Joan,” I said and she nodded.

“I know, but I deputize you.”

She ran after Bree and I sighed, knowing that Rangers couldn’t deputize and that neither of them had told me where anything was happening, so there wasn’t much I could do to help the situation.

Bisbee.

I walked through Bisbee later this evening and saw Jimmy coming towards me. I asked if he wanted to meet a friend of mine and he came with me. Rye met us in the middle of the street and I smiled. “Rye! Hey there!”

“Well hello Trin!” she greeted me back.

“I was just comin’ to find you! This here’s Jimmy; he’s Natalie’s best friend.”

“Howdy ma’am!” Jimmy looked up to her.

“Hello there Jimmy. I am Rye pleasure to meet you,” Rye looked at him.

“Jimmy, this is my friend Rye. Her and her husband were friends of mine way back in the town I lived in before coming to Tombstone! Over fifteen years ago!” I exclaimed.

“Nice to meet you too Miss Rye!”

“Is your husband around?” I looked at her.

“The pleasure is all mine and no Trin. Cole is off in another town right now. He will be around later in the day.”

“Oh okay.”

“Who is your family, sweetie?” Rye asked Jimmy.

“Mrs Joan dopting me Mis Rye. Before dat, my name is Wheeler. But I only one roun here..Ma ma she die when I lil, and pa he in prison. So I orphan.”

“Oh your a orphan as well...well let me tell you a secret. When Mr Cole and I are settled I wanted to talk to the matron to help out there with all you wonderful children.”

“Oh wow, well we need someone nice there. The matron she meaner dan a bag o hornets. But I hope I not be there much longer, Mrs Joan wan me as her son.”

“Just glad you’ve got somewhere else to stay, Jimmy,” I looked at him.

“All the children tell me she is mean...I am not liking hearing that,” Rye nodded.

“Me too Miss Trin..I no like eatin horse stew, or gilla monser chili.”

“Well I know Mr. Cole went to another town and he found some very nice things that he brought back by wagon for some of the children in the orphanage. I have them and would like to gift them to everyone. I was heading my way there now to see the children if you both would like to join me.”

“Oh wow, I don think we ever get gifts before..not since I been der. Corse we thing a good meal a treat ese days,” Jimmy chuckled.

“Well there is a new lady in town that I don’t mind all you children calling me Aunt Rye. Matron may be mean but my home is always open for all you children anytime,” Rye winked at him.

“Oh wow, thank you Miss Rye, Also, ifn you never need a horse, or need someone tend yore horses, let me know!” Jimmy exclaimed.

“Maybe you could show us your home, Rye? I don’t think I know exactly where it is. I just know you live here in Bisbee.”

“Well you may need to talk to Mr. Cole. I think he would like a horse but we would need to find a place for it. We don’t really have a yard,” Rye said and looked at me. “And I really would love to show you my home but there are still crates all over the place. We are still needing to unpack.”

“No problem,” I giggled.

“I work at the Coral in Tombstone, and the Black Diamond stables, I can help if you need sometimes,” Jimmy said.

“I really appreciate that Jimmy that would be very helpful for Mr. Cole.”

“I knew there was a reason I had to introduce the two of ya!” I smiled at them both. “I think I’m gonna see if I can find Natalie. Would you like that Jimmy? She might be at home readin’.”

“So I wonder for now if you both would like to join me with the other children?” Rye asked and nodded to me. “Sounds good meet me over there. And let Natalie know I miss her.”

“Where shall I get her to meet you?”

“I am walking to the orphanage with the other kids,” Rye said.

“Get ‘er to meet us at the orphanage Miss Trin..I miss Natalie too,” Jimmy nodded.

“Jimmy would you like to walk with me while miss Trin goes to find Natalie?” Rye asked.

“Sure miss Rye!” he nodded.

“Will do. I’ll see you both tomorrow!” I smiled and walked back to Pearce.

August 20, 1900

Black Diamond.

This morning I rode into Diamond and hopped off my horse, seeing Aeryne sitting by the pond with the ducks in the middle of town. I walked over to her and said, “Hey there, Aeryne.”

“Hey Trin. How are you?”

“I’m alright. Any leads on our mystery?”

“Yeah all a fraud. Everything I found out wasn’t what I thought it was.”

“What do you mean?”

“Maybe I am from around here or maybe not, there is no way to tell that I know of. The papers I found turned out to be as a result of an attempt to bribe my father years ago.”

“So there’s no case?”

“There is a case but no leads. I have no idea who my parents might or might not be. Could be anyone.”

“What about the badge?”

“The badge is still a mystery, looks like it matches up to what a tombstone sheriffs badge might have looked like back in the day. Problem is its a pretty standard design, it could also look like a badge from any number of towns or cities all over the country. Just a star in a circle, and the writing on it is long since rusted away.”

“What would you like me to do?” I sighed.

“On the bright side we have two new deputies in town, so if you need any help with anything feel free to call on them too. Conversely if you have any problems with them please let me know...” she went on and then looked at me. “Oh Trin... honestly I don’t know what can be done, the trail is cold as far as I can tell.”

“So you’re saying you don’t want my help anymore then?”

“Well if you have any ideas I am open to hearing them.”

“Let me think on it.”

“Birth records and adoptions records are out, seems Stormy’s family might have been responsible for records keeping... if you take my meaning...” she said and I rolled my eyes, making her nod.
“Exactly...”

“I’m glad you got some new deputies. Now if you could get them to fire her I’d be happy.”

“Well between you and I, I think she is doing that job herself... Hey, while you are in town... do you know anything about what happened with Nat in school last week?”

“Yes, I do....” I sighed. “How’d you hear bout that?”

“Jimmy told myself, Autumn and Angeles about it the other day.”

“Oh I see... I really don’t know what to do about it, Aeryne. I’ve never looked after a child. Now suddenly I’ve got one who’s scared to go to school because the teacher pulled her hair. A teacher who had let her sit with Jimmy before but then walked over to her and went to move her to the other side without a word and Natalie ran out of there.”

“I can’t say I blame her at that Trin. I was horrified when Jimmy told us.”

“She’s mortified to go back now. Not just because of the teacher but also because the girls kept giving her looks, and now all this with Payton has got her really confused.”

“I think a good talking to at the very least is in store for said teacher. I will not have my students treated like that even by another teacher. Payton? How so?”

“Well Payton was caught stealing ten coins from the strong box of the bank the other day... Aly and I discussed it and we don’t want the child to go to jail and court... So we’re giving her some other community work as punishment. Seeing as Payton confessed and returned the money. But it’s gotten Nat all shook up.”

“What is our town coming to Trin, that the children are so troubled?”

“My money’s on the new matron at the orphanage. I’ve heard bad things about her.”

“Good mornin’ ladies,” Ty walked over then.

“Come on over and join us, Ty,” I looked over and waved.

“Ahh good morning Deputy Ty, nice to see you,” Aeryne looked over at him.

“Deputy?” I smiled.

“Yep, he is one of our new recruits!”

“Well that’s great!”

“Thank you,” Ty smiled. “Guess I should call you boss, huh Miss Aeryne?”

“Proud of you, Ty. When you first got to town you were even leery of bein’ around me,” I chuckled at the memory and he laughed.

“I prefer Aeryne if you don’t mind...” Aeryne laughed. “Sheriff at worst.”

“When she’s really in trouble, Ms. Massiel,” I winked at Aeryne and she chuckled.

“So what can we do to help Nat feel more comfortable returning to school Trin?” Aeryne asked.

“I have no idea... With Payton giving her weird looks, Sabi and Ruby and Poppy not wanting to trade with her and wanting to make her do all the work on their island... And all of them giving her funny looks for wanting to sit with her best friend who’s a boy...”

“Ahhh well there is another problem right there,” Aeryne nodded.

“She doesn’t really have much motivation to go. Problem is... The girls in Mississippi where she’s from, they were awful to her. Wouldn’t give her a break. It’s why she read so much. They were even worse on the train ride here. So she already has a distrust of other girls her age. That’s why she doesn’t want to sit on that side.”

“I am sure Sabi, Poppy and Ruby did not mean to be mean to her Trin. They are not that sort of girls... though that point seems largely moot now.”

“Not to mention...” I looked between them. “She was almost adopted back in Mississippi by a woman who was wonderful to her... She got real attached and excited about it. Then she saw these outlaws shoot her down cause she was a woman and had no guns on. She’s afraid to get attached to any woman without a gun now.”

“That’s awful,” Ty shook his head.

“That is a problem for sure. Though thankfully she has you.”

“I honestly could use some help... I never thought I would have a child to care for... When I first brought Nat over to Diamond and told Alex about it, he laughed at the idea cause it was so ridiculous.”

“Anything I can do to help any of my students I will gladly do. Including finding that teacher and having a word or two with her,” Aeryne said. “I probably won’t even wear my badge...”

“You mean when talking to the teacher? I’m debating that I should just do that myself. In stead of having a bunch of folks gang up on her, you know?”

“Well regardless the point must be made to her. There are ways to discipline a child and ways not to... and pulling a child’s hair is DEFINITELY on the not list.”

“Natalie said she didn’t even tell her to move,” I nodded.

“How is a child supposed to learn anything if she is afraid to even be at school?”

“Just walked over, stood behind her and pulled.”

“Completely unacceptable...” Aeryne shook her head.

“I wouldn’t mind some help with a couple of other cases actually... Since I have both of you. The suspects may wander around here so I could use some help.”

“Well before we go off topic Trin... Have you seen Poppy lately?”

“I have not.”

“Ty? Have you?”

“No ma’am,” he shook his head.

“Please keep an eye out for her. She hasn’t done anything wrong but I am concerned for her.”

“When did you see her last?” Ty asked.

“It’s been a good while. And... Sabi is no longer living with Stormy and Mike. I helped her get to relatives out east to stay for a while.”

“Oh? Well that’s a good thing I s’pose.”

“Poor Sabi has had a lot of changes lately,” Ty observed.

“Yes, I suspect Poppy has done similarly but I don’t know. I just want to make sure she is alright. At best she could probably use a couple more friends. And she has at that Ty, but she is with good folks who will give her stability back east. She is in good hands.”

“Well I don’t have much experience with kids... but can try to talk to her if I see her,” Ty said.

“That’s all I am asking. Or let me know if you see her.”

“Sure will.”

“Can I ask ya’lls opinion on someone...?” I asked hesitantly. “What do ya’ll know about this Joan lady who’s in the cavalry?”

“I haven’t met her, I don’t reckon,” Ty shook his head.

“Very little. She was going to adopt that odd girl that was here a month or two ago.. can’t recall her name. She is married or with Amos isn’t she?”

“I believe Nat said they are related somehow.”

“I think I have seen her on the payroll run a few times but never see her actually around town.”

“She found her very... controlling last night but she has a nice house over in Benson. And I had a rather intimidating conversation with her.”

“Oh?” Aeryne looked at me.

“All I wanted to know was some information... It’s not even a case.. yet... But if it turns into one it will be very serious. She wouldn’t give me the information for a long time then finally gave me an estimated number... Which hardly helps... Then prodded me for wanting to know why I wanted to know. All I said was I was trying to help one of her relatives and to back off because we’re both on the same side. She finally said she trusted me.”

“Well... a lot of folks around here do not trust one another, that much is plainly obvious...” Aeryne shook her head.

“She’s a ranger. I’m a Pinkerton Detective.”

“Maybe you stumbled into a family scuffle?”

“I know that I did. That’s why I was pressing her, but I didn’t want it to sound like I was accusing her family, because I’m not sure that I am yet... Just... if you see Miss Ashton and Rikki talking about horses, would you let me know what they say please?”

“Yes ma’am,” Ty nodded.

“Ahh... Ashton huh?” Aeryne said then. “I haven’t met her myself but I have heard about her. She is the one adopting Peyton right?”

“I believe so,” I nodded.

“Wow, I have a lot to learn and a lot of people to meet,” Ty chuckled.

“The other thing.... If you see Xavior or Ben Cravens... I need their fingerprints somehow. I haven’t seen them around Tombstone and am enlisting reinforcements, I s’pose,” I chuckled.

“I haven’t seen either in town,” Aeryne shook her head.

“Figures. Idiots probably up and disappeared cause they knew I was onto ‘em so they’ll let the case go cold.”

“My suggestion about Ashton though, talk to Angeles. I think she knows her on some level. And I trust Angeles.”

“Not sure I do but... I’ll look into that angle,” I admitted.

“Well if it gets the job done...” Aeryne nodded. “Ty... here is the one thing you must learn about being in law... if you learn nothing else...” she looked at him. “Personal feelings never ever come before your responsibility. If you see your own mother breaking the law you are still expected to arrest her just like you would anyone else. Just try not to shoot her,” she winked and Ty laughed.

“Mmhmm. Don’t become like some deputies who have more friends that are outlaw than law....” I winked at Aeryne, knowing she knew I was talking about Stormy and she nodded.

“Well I have one outlaw friend but I’m sure we would both be happy to shoot at each other,” he admitted.

“It’s okay to know who they are but don’t go about hangin’ out with them... Unless of course you’re having a drink with ‘em for information,” I winked at Aeryne.

“Right, plenty of outlaws, especially the pretty ones will try to use you to get away with things.”

“Mmhmm.”

“Never let yourself be put in that situation.”

“I’ll remember that,” he blushed.

“And if you need me for anything Ty.. I’m good at gathering witness statements... Or dusting for prints if that will help further a case along in court,” I said to him. “I’ve got an office there at the end of the street by the gate. You can just drop me a note and I’ll come help.”

“Wearing this badge is an honor I never thought I’d have so I take it very serious,” Ty said.

“I like him already, Aeryne,” I smiled.

“Thank you, Miss Trin. I’m sure I’ll be knockin’ on your door.”

“I appreciate that a lot Ty,” Aeryne nodded to him and looked at me, “As do I Trin. He is going to do great.”

“Well you have more confidence than I do,” he grinned.

“You’re fortunate in that Diamond is pretty quiet. Now, at least...” I smiled.

“Yea, good place to learn, I reckon.”

“Yes that will change before long,” Aeryne said.

“Once they start to see there are deputies around.. Outlaws will come just to get a rise out of ya. Trust me.”

“Yup. Lot himself most likely,” Aeryne said.

“Morning folks!” Alex’s voice made me turn and smile, seeing my best friend and we all greeted him in return.

“How are ya?” I asked him.

“Have you met Deputy Ty?” Aeryne asked.

“We’re just giving the new deputy some beginning advice,” I said.

“I think we met awhile back,” Alex nodded.

“Ahh good!” Aeryne smiled.

“And deputy now, very nice!” Alex said.

“I am still trying to convince Alex to come work in our clinic,” Aeryne winked.

“I’ll come over and work here anytime.”

“If there’s a call I’m sure he’ll work anywhere,” I winked at Alex.

“True. I don’t mind traveling around,” he nodded.

“How are things going Alex?” Aeryne asked.

“Feel better now that this thing’s back?” I touched his left hand where the ring sat again.

“Great! I feel a lot better,” Alex smiled.

“Well look at that!” Aeryne looked over.

I gave him a hug because I could and said, “Told you they’d work it out, Aeryne.”

“Yup! I am happy for you both Alex!” Aeryne smiled.

“Thanks!”

“I miss this place sometimes...” I looked around.

“Hmmmmm I know a cure for that....” Aeryne grinned.

“Why do you think I’m here now, woman?” I laughed. “It ain’t for the ducks.”

“What do you have against ducks?” Ty asked.

“Shhh you will hurt their feelings!” Aeryne teased.

“David turned me off of damn ducks,” I muttered.

“Last time I looked that duck was still there,” Alex said and I rolled my eyes.

“What?” Aeryne looked between us.

“David left a present for Trin in her old apartment and it’s still there,” Alex explained.

“David Norwood? Is he even in town anymore?” Aeryne asked.

“I haven’t seen him in ages,” Alex shook his head.

“Seen his bratty little kid nephew but not him,” I muttered.

“I don’t think I have met the nephew,” Aeryne said.

“Lucky you,” I winked.

“That kid looked like he was going to be trouble,” Alex agreed.

“Alex, do you remember that little girl back in Benson who kept ending up in your house?” Aeryne asked.

“Kate or Katie or something?”

“Yeah that was her. That was the kid Joan was adopting I think. Another trouble maker.”

“She was um... kinda clingy.”

“Oh Trin,” Aeryne looked at me. “I am sure you have seen the signs around town but Angeles has a children’s party this weekend. Maybe that would help Nat break the ice with some of the kids in town?”

“Oh that’s a good idea,” Alex smiled.

“Oh that might be fun. She might also help Alex out in the clinic.”

“Wonderful!” Aeryne exclaimed.

“Libby seemed to think she’d do a good job. When is the party?”

“I think there is a sign on the saloon here in town. If not they are all over the place on Allen Street.”

“Ah alright.”

“I am not sure I am afraid. I would imagine Saturday afternoon.” Aeryne said and then looked at Ty. “So Ty, were you able to read over all those manuals I gave you last night?”

“Yes, was seein’ double for a while, but got through them,” Ty nodded.

“Good! Do you have any questions?” Aeryne laughed.

“One of them said there were blank forms in the office for witness reports and such... But I didn’t see any.”

“Ahhh yes, behind my desk there is a little box with them in there.”

“Oh okay.”

“Stormy may tell you that’s her desk but don’t believe her.”

“She doesn’t need a desk,” I laughed and winked at Aeryne.

“She is normally very friendly to me but last night I saw her at the event and she really didn’t say much to me. Did my joining cause any problems?” Ty asked.

“Nah not at all Ty. That’s just Stormy,” Aeryne assured.

“Ain’t like ya took work from her....” I chuckled. “Sorry, I should really be nice but... It’s just so hard,” I winked at Alex.

“I’m just going to smile and nod,” Alex said.

“She may have been a bit upset too, though she sure did nothing about it,” Aeryne said.

“That lesson we talked about earlier Ty? Stormy.... is struggling with... So please do not let her lead you astray. If there is any question ask. If you don’t know who to ask look for Castion Eyre, he will always tell it like it is. Or Suzy of course. Or me,” she laughed.

“The only other thing in the handbooks that kinda confused me was the report writin’ but I’m sure after a couple I’ll have that figured out.”

“It gets easier with practice,” I assured him. “I can do em in my sleep now. Course I just do incident reports and witness statements,” I smiled.

“And you will have plenty of practice, I guarantee that. Just remember details count.”

“Well I can be almost obsessive about detail which is usually a fault,” Ty laughed. “But reckon in this case will be good.”

“That’s the best thing I’ve heard all day,” I smiled. “A deputy who knows how to write reports.”

“Yup, you are in the right job,” Aeryne joked.

“Well never claimed I knew how to write ‘em yet,” Ty said.

“It’s pretty straight forward,” Aeryne said. “The only tough part we have right now is that we have no mayor in town. So getting warrants signed can be.... frustrating.”

“Who does it then?”

“Suzy is your best bet there. Or Angeles. Any judge or our mayor basically.”

“From what I seen last night, would need a fast horse to catch miss Suzy. She was always on the move,” Ty observed.

“True enough, Ty. She’s like the wind. Whips in, whips out,” I laughed.

“But don’t let her gruff attitude fool you. She is one of the best resources we have for any kind of help we need. Back up, or town problems, or questions.”

“That’s the way it was when she gave me the badge,” Ty smiled.

“Then at the saloon last night she greeted a few people then was out of town before I even realized she left.”

“Yep that’s Suzy,” Aeryne laughed.

“I met John last night too. He is a deputy too right?” Ty asked.

“The kids tend to be scared of her too... not sure why.. Yes he is. He also just started. And before you say anything Trin, yes I know....”

“It’s good to see some new deputies around here,” Alex commented.

“John have a last name?” I asked, thinking of John Davis who had been my partner for like, a week.

“Grey...” Aeryne said.

“Ah yes. You know what, Aeryne?”

“Well... he is directly related to Stormy.”

“Ah. That means nothing.. Mark Grey was a good lawman before he turned Native...”

“Well good. I am glad you will give him an honest shake then,” she smiled. “Not everyone has been so... understanding...”

“Can’t pick your family, right?” I nodded.

“True enough! What ever became of Mark Grey anyway? I met him just once as I recall.”

“Disappeared like most,” I shrugged.

“He and his wife were to adopt Ruby,” Aeryne remembered.

“I think I met him twice,” Alex said.

“Any outlaws been around these parts lately?” I asked.

“We had an incident Sunday before last..” Aeryne said.

“Is that the one where you said Stormy ddid nothing?” I looked at her.

“I guess Garth and Lisa got into it at the saloon and started a shoot out. Yup, thats the one.”

“Lisa?” Ty chuckled under his breath.

“Lisa Jones,” I looked at him.

“Right in front of all the kids, lucky none of them were shot. Including Stormy’s kid.”

“Nat said that they shuffled the kids off the street last night just ‘cause there was a bunch of outlaws around,” I said about last night.

“Wow...” Alex shook his head.

“They weren’t even causing a problem. Were all just talkin’.”

“If that had been my kid I would’ve flipped,” Alex said.

“Yea they did,” Ty nodded.

“Had I been there things would have turned out quite differently,” Aeryne promised.

“Garth was drinkin out in the street and gettin loud with several kids around him last night,” Ty explained and then looked at Aeryne. “So why would Stormy not do anything?”

“Here in Diamond Ty?” Aeryne asked.

“No, Tombstone, sorry.”

“Oh okay.”

“Sorry that was last night in Tombstone. Why didn’t Stormy do a thing about her kid being near all that gunshot?” I got us back on topic.

“Why didn’t she do anything about them causing problems here?” Ty wanted to know.

“Same reason she didn’t lift a finger when I put her on a train back east. What that reason is I cannot begin to fathom.”

“Especially around the kids,” Ty sighed.

“Her kid, that is,” Aeryne said. “Who also happens to be my niece.”

“And that is one of the main reasons I moved,” I sighed.

“Well it won’t be a problem anymore. I refuse to stand for it,” Aeryne promised.

“Good. If you see it happen talk to Suzy,” I advised.

“Sounds like things can get more complicated than I thought in this business,” Ty observed.

“If I see any law person helping any outlaw get away with breaking a law I will arrest their butts right along with the outlaws as accessories.”

“It does get complicated. That’s why I like being a doctor,” Alex looked at Ty.

“Well just to be open with ya, I’m friends with Lisa but that wont never stop me from doing my duty if she breaks the law here,” he promised.

“This is why I like Aeryne,” I grinned.

“Thats all I ask Ty, I would never ask you not to be friends with someone. But don’t let that friendship interfere with your job,” Aeryne said.

“Or we were friends laughs ....she wasn’t to happy about seein’ this badge on me last night...”

“So we can expect a visit from Lisa probably huh?” Aeryne looked at me.

“I would think so,” I nodded.

“Ty I am not going to put you on duty quite yet. I want you to be comfortable with what your role here is and in writing reports and making arrests. In fact we might role play a few crimes to help you along,” Aeryne suggested.

“Oh okay. Whatever you think is best,” he nodded.

“If you need a victim for that, you can use me,” Alex offered.

“But that said, you cannot ignore crimes happening in front of you,” Aeryne chuckled hearing Alex.

“This could be fun...” I laughed.

“I’ve only been in a cell twice. Once because Trin put me in there, and that’s all I’ll say about that, and once for public drunkenness and puking on the sheriff’s shoes,” Alex admitted.

“Shh...” I chuckled and nudged him, remembering the cell in Bisbee. “Then we found the trap door and uh... Yep. Hey look at the ducks!”

“...And that is how babies are made...” Aeryne said and Alex laughed at that.

“I won’t tell you the other man I was in a cell with. You’d all shun me, I’m sure,” I said, thinking of the time with TJ in Mexico.

“Lot?” Aeryne asked.

“Nope.”

“I danced with Lot once,” Alex shuddered at the memory and we all laughed.

“All the nice pretty ducks..... Natalie gave them names but I forget them,” I tried to change the subject.

“He um... doesn’t smell nice. Oh yeah, I think they were all D names,” Alex nodded. “Trin, do you think Nat gets grossed out easily?”

“I don’t think so... She reads Sherlock all the time...” I winked at him.

“That’s good. If she wants to work in the clinic she’ll have to have a strong stomach.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing how she does,” I nodded.

“I bet she’ll be good.”

“With you and Libby teaching her, she’ll be fantastic,” I smiled.

Aeryne headed off to do the rounds then and I told her to tell me if she needed more help with her family. Ty wandered off as well and then Alex and I headed for the bakery to have something to eat.
