Kansas.
This morning I riding through Kansas when I saw Frank in front of his house with a dog beside him. I told him that I was looking for writers for the paper and Dulci, who was standing nearby, suggested a column about hunters and horses from Frank. She said that she was a doctor in Amiville and Frank said he had a store in East Colorado. He suggested that I talk with some of the Native community to tell stories and we talked about how that was my plan but I just needed to write some stories down. We talked about hunting and Frank gave me a story about a buffalo and a field mouse. We talked about a regular column of animal stories for the children.
Wyoming.
I walked over towards the Cherokee village and found Little Sky healing Manipi, the dog who had gotten hurt. I talked with Little Sky about the newspaper and explained to her what it was, and that she could tell me stories and I would write them down. She seemed nervous about the idea but I promised to her that she didn’t have to put her name in the paper. Little Sky told me she was watching out for a mountain lion that was nearby and I promised to come back later to see how things resumed.
Colorado Springs.
I rode over to Colorado and knocked on Adder’s door. “Taurus? It’s Trin.”
Adder opened the door with his gun drawn and I raised an eyebrow as he said, “Howdy Trin, sorry about that. Had some trespassers recently. Next one gets put in the hospital.”
“No problem. Have some admirers do ya?”
“No idea. They’re all a bit weird,” he said and I chuckled. “Come on in.”
I followed him in and saw a picture of us when the first Black brother was hanged and I looked from it to Adder. “I see you’ve still got that picture up, hmm?”
“Aye and it’s waiting for the other two in the set,” Adder chuckled. “Take a seat.”
“They’re still at large hmm?”
“Aye they are. They’ve been quiet for almost a month though”
“Indeed... haven’t heard anything about them either. Nebraska’s been quiet since Buu came last week.. Though Brent is back in town. At least we’ve got a local law again.”
“Good to hear. You told him about Buu and Kale yet?”
“I did,” I nodded. “He’s aware of the problem and said he was going to file some paperwork on it. Haven’t heard anything since.”
Adder shook his head knowingly and said, “File paperwork? He should be recruiting more lawmen, give the town some protection when he’s missing!”
“So what’s going on here with these trespassers?”
“Seems some folks got no respect for privacy.” Adder patted. his colt “They’ll respect this though.”
“You’ll show ‘em. If anyone could, you could.”
“Came back into town from an overnight stay in Arizona the other morning to find every door in this cabin wide open. Nothing missing, just some nosey asshole musta been wandering round.”
“That’s not good, Taurus...” I raised an eyebrow.
“Then today as I’m stood here some woman knocks at the door, then lets herself in.”
“Can’t you arrest her for trespassing? I don’t know what to say, Taurus. They should show you some respect.”
“They should show any home owner some respect, but especially me. I guess they haven’t heard an Englishman’s home is his castle. Hmm... there’s an idea. I need a.... drawbridge!”
“And a guard dog?” I chuckled.
“Nah, lions. And a cannon.”
I chuckled and then said, “I think I cleared the air with the Wyoming tribe yesterday. I’ve even got one of them as a writer for my paper.”
“Good!”
“I told her I wouldn’t be putting out any names of writers or the outlaws that attack. Will be as anonymous as it can be.”
“Even better. I think it’d be good for folks to hear from the natives more, break down a few walls.”
“I don’t want to put them at risk but if people understand them from their perspective...”
He nodded and said, “Though some of them could do with a bit of that too.”
“Things are pretty quiet around here otherwise though?
“Aye pretty much. I’ve been busier when Im out on patrol though. Especially in Georgetown.”
“Oh?” I looked over at him. “What’s going on in Georgetown?”
“Had a run in with Buu and some scruffy looking guy I don’t know, they were harassing a family of settlers from Bear River.”
“Oh were they? Do you know the family?”
“Nope I didn’t get the names, there were three of em; Father, mother, daughter. The mother was pregnant too.”
“The Pinkertons...” I wondered, remembering the family I’d just met. “They’re just new in town... I can’t believe he would just harass them..”
“Think the outlaws wanted money or their horses. I got myself involved and Harley’s friend turned his focus to me. That gave the family time to get away.”
“Good you sacrificed yourself and didn’t get shot over it...?” I shook my head and he nodded. “I should talk to them... Make sure they’re okay.”
“All went as I intended it to. Hell I reckon he thinks he intimidated me too. Dumb bastard didn’t realize I got exactly what I wanted from the situation,” Adder said.
“There’s no law in Wyoming is there?”
“Just the Marshals, as far as I know.”
“You can’t arrest Buu for the harassment on the Pinkertons?”
“Could do, but I’m not gonna try that alone.”
“Of course not. No one would ask you to. Something’s gotta be done, Taurus.”
“Personally, I’m hoping the Amiville law get him, he’s wanted there, dead.”
“I heard about that,” I nodded. “Well I’m gonna head home. Have a good evening, Taurus.”
“Take care Trin, good seeing you again”
“You too. Hopefully the trespassers will stop.”
“Or I’ll have to stop em!”
“See ya Taurus,” I smiled and headed out and did some work in the mines.
Nebraska.
I was sitting in my room upstairs when I heard someone in the office. I walked down and met Suzie and we talked about the newspaper and how she was staying with her grandmother.
Kansas.
I went to the Cheyenne village and asked Sasha if she would be willing to help write for the paper. She said she didn’t write but that I should talk to Shane. We talked about their upcoming wedding and about their family and then I headed home for lunch.
Nebraska.
I walked over to the Cherokee village and talked with Grey Wolf and Ayashe about their upcoming marriage. We parted ways and I headed home.
