Colorado.
This afternoon I went to the saloon and talked with the people there, and met a woman named Elizabeth. I asked Sam why Elise, the cow, hadn’t been around for a couple of weeks and he said that she always came back. They blamed the natives and I told the girl there that the natives wouldn’t bother them if they didn’t bother the natives. I showed a girl the market and we talked about being far away from family.
“Sam, can we talk in private for a bit?” I asked him after a while and we went to my office. “You remember a while back,” I hesitated... “I told you I might need a safe place to stay?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Well... there have been some developments…”
“Okay.”
“But they can't leave this room. If certain people found out…”
“You know you can trust me.”
“Sam... I found out there is Apache in my blood... Four generations back. My brother was looking through some documents for father’s estate.”
“Yes ma’am…” he nodded thoughtfully.
“Sam if this information ever got out... I would be counted among all the Natives and seen as the enemy.
“I agree… I promise there is no reason to worry.”
“But it has done one positive thing... It’s allowed me to connect with the Apache chief…”
“Sam Spaid also walks with all races…” Sam said in third person.
“And I talked to Adder about his threat to arrest me... He said I could quote them and talk to whoever I want, just not have a whole column dedicated to them. Which makes sense.”
“Okay.”
“You have Native in your blood too?” I looked at him curiously.
“No but lived with the Algonquins in Illinois....And knew Chief Blackhawk.”
“I’m just so scared, Sam... They keep saying how I have to choose between the two worlds and that I can’t live in both but... Do I have to? I mean can’t I pass information back and forth without the written word... as well as learn about my heritage?”
“I do not see why you can’t.”
“In other news... Do you want me to write an article about Elsie missing?” I asked him.
“It is people like you and me could bring harmony to the all the nations and the white folks.”
“That’s what I’ve been trying to do for months. Maybe with the Apache I’ll actually succeed.”
“You must understand.. Sam is and will always be behind any thing you decide to do.”
“Sam.. about Elsie..?”
“Well...Back to the cow,” he nodded.
“I really want to write a piece about this... And not just ’cause I’m desperate for story. I know how much you love her.”
“I walked in one day and she was missing. I have looked everywhere for her.”
“Everywhere?” I asked pointedly.
“Well yes....Anywhere I go I always keep an eye open. I stopped a constant search.”
“The Apache village?”
“I have never just walked in there…” he rubbed his head.
“Maybe I should wander over there and talk to Tala or Chief Nah about something and look around for it while I’m there.”
“Not today, ma’am. Stay away.”
“Why not? Sam if they…”
“They are being blessed with the Marruagof each other.”
“What?”
“I gave them both my Blessings last night.”
“Oh... A wedding…?”
“Yes it is a wonderful event.”
I smiled and leaned back, relaxing. “Alright, I won’t press them on it. We’ll just let it be and see if Elsie comes home. Shall we wander outside and see what’s new in the streets?”
“I was honoured in sharing some happiness last night with them.”
“I’m glad for you. They don’t welcome just anybody for that,” I smiled.
“Relationships are shared with only a trusted few too. Like I told you.....I can walk with many holding my head up high,” he said and we walked out of the office together.
