April 2, 1870

Colorado.

This morning I made some breakfast and went down to sit in the chair in front of my office. I smiled seeing Bo already sitting in my chair. “Well hey there,” I greeted him. “Enjoyin’ my chair, are ya?”

“Yep, sure am. Want it?”

“Nah, you enjoy. I’ll be sitting enough today.”

“Always a reason what we do.”

“Have to try to get this paper out today.”

“Well I help but don’t know nothing about paperin’,” Bo said and I chuckled. “Yea think it’s funny do ya? Ya looking very pretty today miss.”

“Why thank you. You’re lookin’ good yourself. Just tryin’ to figure out where I want to work today... Office or saloon…”

“Well saloon wouldn’t be a good thing now.”

“No? Why not?”

“Well I might want to do some dancing with ya… and then won’t get no work done.”

“Then we’d get absolutely nothing done.”

“I just sit here a few and dream,” he nodded.

“Guess I should go back in and keep writing. Saw you out here so I had to come say hi.”

“Well ya don’t have to leave me. Might need a hand or two.”

I nodded and sat on the stool, taking out the notebook. “How’s this?”

“Well I can see ya better,” he said and started to sing.

I chuckled and asked, “How’d you know I like to work with music?”

“Well we all like it, don’t we?”
“I still can’t believe someone tried to kill Adder…” I sighed as I got to the last article. “That the mayor wanted to hire someone to kill him…”

“Well I can’t say I know the mayor very well.”

“I was almost responsible for it too,” I sighed. “The mayor came to me looking for a hired gun. She didn’t like the guy I brought her though and went to find someone else in Kingsley to do it. I didn’t know who she was putting the hit on. If I had known it was the sheriff I wouldn’t have gotten involved. He’s my best friend, Bo. If anything happens to him…’

“It be fine. Ya know what he said about natives?”

“How do you know? They dragged him down to Kingsley and almost killed him. He escaped but it could happen again… I can’t lose him too,” I looked at him desperately. “If this had to do with the Natives why wouldn’t Free get Natives to kill him? They would have succeeded.”

“Well ain’t nothing no one can do he dug it up and it gonna happen.”

“He was protecting the town. They declared war,” I sighed.

“Well ain’t nothing no one can do he dug it up and it gonna happen.”

“He was protecting the town. They declared war,” I sighed.

“Well he should of let it go all he will get is death and nothing more.”

I found myself conflicted between two worlds and couldn’t believe I was defending the sheriff when he was attacking my own people. “Bo…” I sighed.

“What, hon?”

“He’s my best friend,” I said, starting to get emotional.

“Come on now… gonna make me feel bad here.”

“I just don’t want anything to happen to him, Bo. I keep losing good men in my life and I’ve known Adder way too long to have something like this happen to him… I know he can be intense sometimes... Hell, he threatened to arrest me for treason once. But he just loves this town and doesn’t wanna see injustice.”

“In justice cause the whites came here. They killed my family, the whites, and took me and raised me as one of their own. Stole land.”

“I looked at him and sighed. “Look, I know, okay? I’ve got Apache in my blood. I feel like I’m torn between two worlds but Adder’s been the one who’s stuck by me ever since Amiville.”

“And when they want it back so it can be free again it’s in justice.”

“But they can’t just wander back in here freely expecting everything to be fine when they verbally declared war, Bo.”

“I never had use for him.”

“That’s Adder’s point,” I stood, getting more upset now.

“Well war is what both makes it.”

“Forget it, I’m going back inside. I won’t listen to you talk about my best friend that way.”

“Do what ya will,” he said and I shook my head angrily, pushing my door open. I went inside and sat at the desk, feeling frustrated as I felt Bo watch me through the window.
